Chevrolet Trax

On September 27, Chevrolet will unveil its all-new Trax compact SUV at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. With its monocoque construction, 4,248mm length, 1,776mm width and 2,555mm wheelbase, the Trax is the perfect urban SUV.

Set for a 2013 launch, the Chevrolet Trax will have two engine options, a 1.4-litre petrol engine that develops 141PS of power and 200Nm of torque and a 1.7-litre diesel engine that develops 131PS of power and 300Nm of torque. Both engines are turbocharged with enough power to support the sporty character of the vehicle.

The petrol engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic is on offer for both the petrol and diesel engines. All manual transmission vehicles will get a Start/Stop system.

There is also an all-wheel drive system for both petrol and diesel engines. With its short wheelbase the Trax is geared for off-roading as well.

Inside, the Trax will get cubby holes on both sides and above the centre console, a storage tray under the passenger seat and a storage area under the cargo floor.

Practicality is further enhanced by the 60/40 split rear seats, a flat folding front passenger seat and 358-litre boot.

The Trax can seat five in comfort and top-of-the-line models will feature Chevy’s new MyLink seven-inch touchscreen high resolution infotainment system. By the end of 2012 Chevrolet will give the MyLink system a navigation app that can be loaded on to compatible smartphones.

The compact SUV market is set for a boom in India. Ford is bringing in the all-new EcoSport compact SUV while Mahindra will be launching the Quanto (based on a shortened Xylo platform) in September 2012. No surprise, the Trax is on the cards for India as well. However, expect a smaller diesel engine under 1,500cc to avail of excise duty cuts in India.

The Chevrolet Trax will undoubtedly rack up the numbers in India and the two-wheel drive options should be more popular due to lower prices.
