517PS 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 will power the AMG GT

Mercedes-AMG GT 4.0-litre Biturbo engine

The Mercedes AMG GT is a few months away from a global unveiling and the company has just revealed its engine details. The Porsche 911 rival will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 dishing out 517PS of power and 650Nm of torque and there are rumours of a 0-100kmph time comfortably under the 4.0 second mark.

This 517PS unit will be available on the range topping model while an entry-spec unit will dish out close to 470PS. 650Nm of peak torque is available at 1750rpm and stays all the way up to 4750rpm before tapering down. Here’s where the 517PS of power kicks in which is there to play with till 6250rpm. The 3982cc V8 has a 7200rpm redline. Called M178, the V8 has two turbochargers mounted on the inside of the cylinder banks instead of outside for better weight distribution cooling. This also lowers the centre of gravity says Mercedes-AMG.

The engine weighs just 209kg and gets dry sump lubrication allowing the unit to be placed further lower down by 55mm. Forged aluminium crankcase and pistons and low friction piston rings reduce weight and hence improve fuel efficiency compared to the 6.3-litre V8 AMG unit in the SLS AMG. The engine sits on active mounts that adjust the position by monitoring car movement so that the balance of the car stays as constant as possible. Since there’s a lot of focus on efficiency, in addition to weight reduction, the AMG GT will get Eco start-stop system and an alternator management system.

AMG is also known for its V8 engine note and special attention was paid to this aspect during development of the M178 engine. The AMG GT gets a sports exhaust system with variable exhaust flaps that are placed on either side of the silencers.  These are logic-driven and controlled depending on the transmission mode, driver's power requirement and the engine speed. The flaps progressively open and give you the full symphony with the right foot buried in.

Mercedes-AMG has tested the engine is both hot and cold climates and on race tracks for reliability and practicality. Northern Sweden, Death Valley in the USA, Nurburgring, Nardo in Italy and Papenburg in Germany are some of the places the AMG GT was put through its rigorous testing programme.
