We take a look at all the new Compact SUVs that are expected to make an appearance in India in 2016. From Maruti Suzuki to Tata to Honda, almost every major manufacturer will get in on the compact SUV craze.

Compact SUVs coming in 2016

The SUV market in India is booming and if you though 2015 was a hot year, 2016 has way more to offer! With Honda, Volkswagen, Tata and Maruti finally getting into the compact SUV segment, there is something for everyone in this list. So lets kick it off with the ones that will make the most impact.

Maruti XA Alpha

Maruti XA Alpha / YBA

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Early 2016

The Maruti XA Alpha is long overdue in India and it will finally make it to India in 2016. Expect the XA Alpha to come with the same engine options as the Baleno but also get the larger diesel motor from the S-Cross. The new XA Alpha will go right up against the likes of the successful Hyundai Creta, the Renault Duster and the upcoming Honda BR-V. The new XA Alpha will also be most likely available at the new Nexa showroom and will eventually share showroom space with another SUV from Maruti, the new Grand Vitara.

Mahindra S101

Mahindra S101 / XUV100

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Early 2016

The Mahindra S101 will be yet another offering from Mahidnra in the sub 4-meter segment but instead of going the butch and old fashioned way like the TUV300 has, expect it to be curvy and more towards the XUV500’s design. That said, expect mechanicals to still stay the same with the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel engine dominating the range. The S101.XUV100 will also be the SUV that Mahindra will choose to return with a gasoline or petrol motor. Expect prices to be ultra competitive with the base model priced at about 7 lakh. The S101 will go up against the Ford Ecosport and the MAruti XA Alpha.

Honda BR-V

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Mid 2016

The Honda BRV is a long awaited SUV from Honda. With Honda finally getting a diesel powered SUV to India, expect it to be a hot seller when it gets launched in mid 2015. The new Honda BRV will also go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and will come with both petrol and diesel engines. The Honda BRV will also get an automatic variant but only in the petrol version. The BRV will also be the only car in its segment that gets seven seats as compared to five seats that the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha. The BRV will also get a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation.

Volkswagen Taigun

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Mid 2016

Volkswagen’s entry into the affordable Indian SUV segment is long awaited and with the Taigun, the German manufacturer will finally make some progress in terms of sales figures and of course, market share. That said, the Taigun will be on the slightly expensive side and will have tough competition from the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Honda BRV. Expect the Taigun to have class leading performance both in terms of engines and in terms of handling dynamics. The Taigun though will be on the slightly more expensive side with prices starting just under the Rs 10 lakh mark and going all the way up to Rs 15 lakh for the top of the line GT versions.

Tata Osprey

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Mid 2016

Tata Motors will launch an all new compact SUV which has been internally been named the Osprey project. The new car will go up against the likes of the Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra TUV300 along with the upcoming Maruti XA Alpha. Although not much is known about the Tata Osprey compact SUV, the car will be based on the same platform that underpins the Tata Zest and Bolt. The new compact SUV will also get the same 1.2-litre petrol Revotron engine and the 1.3-litre Multijet engine that is supplied by Fiat. Expect the Osprey to be based on the Nexon concept that was showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and to get styling features like a tailgate mounted spare wheel to make it look tougher and more aggressive.

New Renault Duster

Expected launch time: Early 2016

The Renault Duster has been with us for a few years now and since then has received just a very minor facelift so far. Now though, the Duster will get a slightly more detailed facelift with all-new headlamps, all-new tail lamps and new bumpers. The new car will also get a new interior and more importantly an automatic gearbox. That said, the new Duster will not get a conventional gearbox or a CVT but in turn will get an AMT unit. The new Duster will also probably get a seven seat option although it is unsure at this time. The new Duster will be available with one petrol and two diesel engines. The Duster will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Honda BRV along with the upcoming Maruti XA Alpha and the Volkswagen Taigun

Chevrolet Adra

Expected price: Rs 5-10 lakh

Expected launch time: Mid 2016

Chevrolet India will launch a new vehicle in the compact SUV segment. Chevrolet Adra, a compact SUV. The Chevrolet Adra in concept form was showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo and we expect to see a production ready version at the 2016 Auto Expo. Although not much is known about the Adra as of now, it will be a sub-4 meter SUV and will be based on the small car global platform. Expect the Chevrolet Adra to receive motive power from the 1.3-litre diesel engine currently employed in the Enjoy MUV. Also the Adra could be provided with the 1.4-litre petrol engine also currently offered in the Enjoy. Expect both an automatic and a manual gearbox with both front wheel drive and eventually a 4-wheel-drive setup.

Ssangyong Tivoli

Expected price: Rs 1o-20 lakh

Expected launch time: Late 2016

Ssangyong already has a presence in India, but in order to make the brand more appealing to the masses, it will launch the Tivoli compact SUV in the near future. The Tivoli will effectively go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Honda BR-V but will be slightly more expensive than the former two. The Ssangyong Tivoli in India will get both a petrol and a diesel engine. The petrol engine is a 1.6-litre motor that makes 128PS of peak power and 160Nm of peak torque. The diesel on the other hand is a 1.6-litre motor that gets 116PS of peak power and 300Nm of peak power. Both engines come with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and are offered with a front wheel drive or all wheel drive setup. Expect this compact SUV to be priced between Rs 12-17 lakh to take the fight straight to Hyundai and Honda.
