Ford has officially recalled 3,072 units of the diesel variant of its mid-size sedan, the Ford Fiesta, manufactured between October 2010 and December 2011. The recall has been issued in order to replace a suspected faulty part – the glow plug control module which is used to start the diesel engine in the car.

Ford issued a statement explaining that the recall was voluntary to ensure customers' safety and satisfaction and no accidents or injuries related to this concern have been reported as of now.

Ford will be writing to customers directly, who will have to visit their local Ford dealers and get the replacement part installed free of charge.Earlier too, the company had recalled its vehicles to replace the same Glow Plug Control Module. Last year, Ford recalled Ford EcoSport diesel and 1.66 lakh units of Figo and Classic.

Over seven lakh vehicles have been recalled by a number of automakers since auto industry body SIAM started a voluntary vehicle recall for safety related issues in India in July 2012. These automakers include bigwigs such as Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Toyota, Ford, Honda and General Motors.

Honda India, too, made an announcement last month that it will carry out preventive replacement of driver side air bag inflators of 1,040 units of Honda Brio, 1,235 units of Honda Amaze and 63 units of Honda CR-V that were manufactured between September 2011 and July 2014.

In September this year, Maruti Suzuki India had announced the recall of 69,555 units of the Maruti Swift Dzire, Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz models manufactured between March 2010 and August 2013, owing to a fault with the wiring harness.

In April this year, in one of the biggest vehicle recalls in India, Maruti Suzuki recalled 1,03,311 units of the Maruti Ertiga, Maruti Swift and Maruti Swift Dzire — manufactured between November 12, 2013 and February 4, 2014 to replace faulty fuel filler neck.

The government is in process of framing a mandatory recall policy that would entail penalties as part of the new Central Motor Vehicle Rules.
