The 2018 BMW X7 is reportedly codenamed as the 'GO7'; will ride on the HPLC architecture

Details of 2018 BMW X7 emerge

BMW has started the development of the X7 almost two years ago. This forthcoming new SUV is codenamed as the ‘GO7’ internally and will be the biggest SUV manufactured by the luxury carmaker. The new X7 SUV will reportedly ride on the HPLC architecture formerly known as the ‘35up’ that shall soon underpin the next-generation 2016 BMW 7 Series.

The X7 will be based on the extended platform of the X5 and X6 SUVs. Unlike the X5, which is also available with four-cylinder engines and in rear-wheel-drive configuration, the X7 is expected to be offered exclusively with six- and eight-cylinder engines and in all-wheel-drive only. Plug-in hybrid technology will also feature in some variants.

This new seven-seater SUV is expected to receive the most luxurious cabin ever seen in a BMW and is set to be even more opulent than the luxury carmaker’s new BMW 7 Series.

The Bavarian carmaker had already announced that this SUV will be built at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. With the introduction of this model BMW plans to boost the annual production of this facility to 4,50,000 vehicles by 2016. This plant also houses the production of X5 M and X6 M models. To fulfill this estimated demand and production of new models BMW is investing approximately Rs 6,000 crore by 2016 at its Spartanburg facility.

The new BMW X7 will intensify the competition between BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and will directly compete with the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV. This new car is expected to be launched by 2018, and we expect it to come to India as well.
