It has been nearly two years since DeltaWing Technologies shocked the world with its DeltaWing racer car at the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race. The car stunned many spectators with its efficiency and styling. The DeltaWing team has now released a rendering of the racer as a four-seat road car, with ambitions of collaborating on a production project.
The DeltaWing road car keeps the same overall shape as the race car to make sure it is still highly aerodynamic and fuel efficient, though this version will seat four passengers. Although only a rendering exists right now, the road car would be made with lightweight aluminum, steel and advanced composite materials to keep its weight down.
This new car is intended to help manufacturers lower the overall fuel economy of their fleet to ensure they meet the 2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that require approximately 23.19kmpl. According to Delta Wing technologies, fuel economy benefits will come from the vehicle’s design and construction irrespective of whether it uses a high-efficiency gas or diesel engine. Compressed natural gas or electricity could also be used for propulsion.
The road-going version of the car has space for four occupants, and could be powered by a compact engine with half the power of conventional sports cars. According to the carmaker, a DeltaWing powered by a four-cylinder engine will produce 110PS of power, and will accelerate from 0-100kmph in six seconds, and at the same time return a fuel economy figure of 25kmpl.
The original DeltaWing racer made its debut at the 2012 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race. Back then it was partially funded by Nissan, and was powered by the Japanese manufacturer’s 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine which produced 300PS of power. Although the car crashed out of that year’s race, subsequent versions have competed in races throughout the USA.
