BMW TwinPower Turbo engine

The recent midlife update definitely made the X3 a much more refreshing car than it was, and now BMW has gone a step further and added some more pep to the SUV as well. The X3 xDrive28i replaces the outgoing normally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engine with the new TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine

The new BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder's displacement of 1,997 cc delivers maximum power of 240 PS @ 5000 rpm and a hefty 352 Nm of torque as early as 1250 rpm. Performance as a result is fairly rapid and the BMW X3 xDrive28i accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 208 km/h.

New BMW X3

This new engine is the most powerful in a new generation of 4-cylinder engines designed in accordance with the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, which aims to combine increased driving enjoyment with reduced fuel consumption and emissions. The twin-scroll turbocharging means that the exhaust stream from cylinders 1 and 4, and the exhaust stream from cylinders 2 and 3, follow separate spiral-shaped paths to the turbine wheel.

This reduces exhaust back-pressure at low engine rpm, allowing the energy of the exhaust gas pulses to be utilized as efficiently as possible. The result is instant throttle response and fast-revving performance. Apart from scorching performance, the X3 has evolved with new technology as well. Auto Start/Stop is now a standard feature which turns off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, providing up to a 3% improvement in fuel economy. Expect this engine to make it to India soon to power not only the X3 but also the soon to be launched 3 Series.
