BMW showcases the 2002 Hommage Concept, based on the M2, and it is quite the looker

BMW 2002 Hommage Concept Side Profile

BMW has unveiled the M2-based 2002 Hommage Concept at the Concours d’Elegance Villa d’Este in Italy. The car is built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the BMW 2002 turbo (yes, with a small 't'), a car that became popular in the late 1960s and is now a prized classic.

As far as the tongue twisting Italian name is concerned, yeah, the Concours d'Elegance Villa d’Este, it is a competition of elegance for old classics -- sounds so much easier this way. This competition of looking-the-most-awesome began way back in 1929 and, for the past 10 years, it’s being organised by BMW at the same venue, Villa d’Este in Italy.

Coming back to the point, the 2002 Hommage Concept draws its design inspiration from the 2002 turbo itself; however, it still a major departure from the original car. It's a concept after all.

The Hommage concept is sure to impress with its compactness, which is because of the fact that it is based on the M2. However, it still is bigger than the 2002 turbo, as nowadays cars have evolved to become bigger. For example, the Mini Cooper, which originally measured about 3 meters in length, now measures about 4 meters (3-door version) in its latest generation.

The M2-based concept features sharp and sculpted protruding chin-like front bumpers, a low setup, and short front and rear overhangs reminiscent of the 2002 turbo. Moreover, the nose is aggressively poised towards the ground and is flanked by a unique headlamp setup that is covered up by a trickle-down air scoop for that added cooling and extra finesse.

The sides also see more creativity flowing into the design, with a distinct door opener and a scoop to cool the rear brakes. Then there are the wheels, which take the typical BMW’s mesh-type design to a whole new level. The paint job is done in two separate parts, with the roof, bonnet and boot lid done with a matte finish, while everything else is finished up in gloss. The parting shoulder line has been taken from the 2002 turbo, with a similar front indicator placement.

The tail too takes a lot from the 2002 turbo, like the angled-up integrated tail spoiler. While an outlandish taillamp and reflector placement make things more interesting, along with the twin quad exhaust popping out beautifully, I am sure they sound crazy! Sadly, the powertrain option hasn’t been revealed.

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW design head said: “Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupé is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today”

He further added that “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupé as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was the technological forerunner of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”
