BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

India’s favourite luxury car maker BMW will enter the four-door coupe segment as it launches the 6-Series Gran Coupe today in a single variant, the 640d.

The BMW 640d Gran Coupe is equipped with the company’s 3.0-litre, twin turbocharged, six-cylinder diesel engine that generates 317PS of power @ 4400rpm and 630Nm of torque between 1500 and 2000rpm. The engine is mated to the latest 8-speed automatic gearbox giving the car a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

The sporty character of the BMW 6-Series until now was limited to the two-door coupe and convertible models. Now with the four-door version, BMW will take the Audi A7 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz CLS Class head on in the sporty four-door sedan arena that offers the best of practicality, style and performance.

The BMW 640d Gran Coupe has been stretched a little compared to its two-door siblings for extra rear leg room and BMW claims that the car can seat five. However, the middle passenger in the rear seat will have to straddle the centre console that extends to the rear seat. That being said, the car has excellent rear leg room for two passengers and the seats are comfortable as well.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe comes loaded with gizmos such as a head-up display that also shows navigation information, daytime running LED rings in the headlamps, auto start/stop, night vision with pedestrian recognition, and surround view. Creature comforts include dual zone climate controlled air-conditioning, cruise control, paddle shifts, electronically adjustable seats with memory function and a high end Bang & Olufsen surround sound system.

Safety features include front and side airbags integrated into the seatbacks, head airbags for both front and rear passengers, three-point automatic seatbelts, ABS, ASC, DTC (dynamic traction control), CBC (corner braking control) and DBC (dynamic brake control). BMW also offers Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Damper Control as optional extras in the car.

BMW has given the 6-Series Gran Coupe latest technologies and solid power to make sure it creates an impact in the luxury four-door coupe segment which has been dominated by the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Audi A7 until now. To do that the pricing will have to be spot-on.

The engine in the BMW 640d Gran Coupe is the same size as that of the Audi A7 Sportback, but the former packs in more power. Priced at Rs 72.70 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the A7 is more affordable than the BMW 640d two-door Coupe that is priced at Rs 80.34 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), which also has the same BMW 3.0-litre twin turbo engine. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Class with a 3.5-litre petrol engine is also priced at Rs 80.34 lakh.

The 640d Gran Coupe has the edge over both rivals in terms of performance, but BMW will have to price the new 640d Gran Coupe attractively to rake in the sales, at a time when Audi is right up there in terms of India sales.
