BMW shows off a 679PS plug-in 5 Series GT Concept

BMW plug-in 5 Series GT concept

With the launch of the i3 and the i8, BMW has already set the mood for an eco-friendly drive and now with by showcasing a 679PS plug-in 5 Series GT concept; they take things a bit further in the green direction.

The German car-maker silently unveiled a 5 Series GT concept earlier this week that pumps a monstrous 679PS of power. For those who still can’t comprehend the number, this one is a hybrid that produces more power than the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The plug-in 5 Series GT Concept makes use of a 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that makes power for two electric motors and can cover a distance of up to 100km on electric power alone. It also sports a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Along with the GT, BMW also showcased plug-in version of the 3 Series and the X5. But unlike the 3 Series Plug-In Hybrid and the BMW Concept X5 eDrive, this one produces a lot more power mainly due to the fact that it makes use of two electric motors instead of one. BMW took the wraps off these prototypes to showcase its plans to increase production of plug-in hybrids. The German car maker intends to add plug-in variants to its entire ‘core-brand models’.
