Mercedes-Benz’s portfolio of luxury car offerings for India seems to be ever growing. With the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG already available to the young, affluent performance oriented luxury car buyer, the German auto giant will soon introduce the regular petrol and diesel powered CLA in India. The CLA-Class will go up against Audi’s new A3 saloon and will target the first time luxury sedan buyer.
The CLA-Class is based on the same platform as the A-Class, B-Class and the soon to be launched GLA-Class. Unlike the A and B-Class which came only with a petrol engine to begin with, the CLA-Class will be available with both petrol and diesel engines at launch. Bookings for the same are expected to begin very shortly at all Mercedes-Benz dealers around the country.
The petrol, badged CLA180 CGi will come with a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection engine making 122PS of peak power at 5000rpm and 200Nm of peak torque between 1,250–4,000rpm. This Euro 6 compliant engine will be capable of propelling the CLA180 from 0-100kmph in 9.3-seconds on to a claimed top speed of 209 kmph. The CLA180 will also get a set of paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
India though predominantly is a diesel driven market, and the CLA will come with a new 2.1-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. Badged the CLA200 CDi, the engine produces 136PS of peak power between 3,600–4,400rpm and 300Nm of peak torque between 1,600–3,000rpm. With a top speed of 220kmph and a claimed 0-100 time of 9.3-seconds, the diesel is only marginally faster than the petrol. Both the petrol and diesel engines will be mated to Mercedes-Benz’s tried and tested 7G-DCT automatic transmission with a dual clutch setup.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class with its phenomenal looks and coupe profile is most certainly destined to be a hotseller for Mercedes-Benz India. The only drawback to the CLA-Class that we can foresee is the lack of space on the insides, especially for the rear passengers and the similarities in interior design between it and the A-Class which might put off some existing A-Class customers that are looking for an upgrade. The CLA-Class is expected to be priced under Rs 30 lakh and counter the Audi A3.
