All-new Volvo XC90 teased

Two weeks down the line Volvo will pull the wraps off its new SUV – the all-new Volvo XC90. This new model will be the first car in its range to be built on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) modular chassis technology which has been developed in-house by the Swedish carmaker.

As Volvo is gearing towards the launch, the company has released details about its modular chassis technology, as well as the first exterior photo of the seven-seater SUV which reveals a portion of the of the front end including the headlamp and a part of the grille.

The teaser image shows the car flaunting T-shaped LED daytime running lights, which have been christened ‘Thor’s Hammer’ by the design team after the shape of the hammer used by the famous Norse God of Thunder Thor. The rendering also shows the new seven-seater SUV sporting bigger grille than the current Volvo XC90.

The Swedish carmaker has stated that SPA has been under in-house development for the past four years, and is the cornerstone of the company’s ongoing Rs 67,369 crore transformation plan. Following the introduction of the Volvo XC90, the platform will be rolled out across the Swedish carmaker’s product range in the future.

Volvo has further stated that the benefits of SPA are two-fold. First, the flexibility of SPA liberates Volvo’s engineers and designers, by allowing them to come up with a wide range of new design features, and improving drivability by introducing safety features, connecting car technologies and creating more interior space. For instance, the new XC90 will feature three rows of seats for up to 7 passengers, with the seats in the third row being usable by passengers up to 170 cm tall.

Secondly, SPA will allow a wide range of cars, powertrains, electrical systems and technologies to be fitted on the same architecture, helping the Swedish automaker to achieve significant economies of scale.

Volvo established its presence in India in 2007, and has since then, worked intensively to market the Swedish brand in this country. Volvo currently markets its products through its dealerships in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Vishakhapatnam and Pune.
