It may well be make-or-break time for a clutch of carmakers that are counting on key upcoming launches to turn the tide for their domestic operations.
Ford, which ranks No. 8 in India -with a market share of under 3% in the first two months of fiscal 2013, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)-is banking on sports utility vehicle EcoSport to reverse its fortunes.
The Volkswagen (VW) Group in India, which also includes the Audi and Skoda brands, is still not present in almost two-thirds of the market-the sub- 5 lakh space.
Now, Europe's No. 1 carmaker is hoping to make that mass play with the launch of small car UP, which is expected to hit Indian roads in a year.
Renault, which has had a chequered existence in India since 2005 - the first five of those years in a JV with the Mahindras - is counting on the Duster SUV to pull itself into the reckoning in India.
