Jaguar to build six reproductions of its Lightweight E-Type that were produced in 1963-64

Jaguar Lightweight E-Type

In a recent announcement, Jaguar declared that it will produce six units of its original race-bred Lightweight E-type that the company produced in 1963-64. The British car manufacturer had planned to manufacture 18 such cars but suspended the production in 1963 after building only 12 units. The Coventry-based car maker now intends to complete the 18-car production run of the Jaguar Lightweight E-Type.

Chassis numbers for these cars were already designated but following the halt of production, they have been dormant until now. All the six cars will be built as per the specifications of the original model that hosted a 3.8 litre straight six engine that produced 304PS – 36PS over the ‘ordinary’ model. In the race-bred trim, the E-type was 114kg lighter than the standard model thanks to the intensive use of aluminium for its body and the engine block. To further keep the weight in check, the interior trims were kept limited to bare minimum, exterior chrome was also given the boot and a host of weight-saving materials were used including manually operated side windows.

The Jaguar E-type was a perfect amalgamation of good looks and performance in its time available at an extremely competitive price. The shape and some of its structural features of the E-Type have been inspired by three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner the Jaguar D-Type. The E-Type then reworked upon to produce a lighter version of the car. Jaguar intends to sell these six cars with the FIA approval to run them at classic events. Keeping in mind the complication of starting production after more than five decades the price is expected to be around £1 million (Rs 9.98 crore approximately).
