New British firm Elemental plans to unveil its lightweight sportscar, the RP-1, at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Elemental RP-1

The United Kingdom is a magical land known for producing tiny track cars that are technically road legal in their home countries and lack roofs. The latest roofless wonder is the Elemental RP-1, and it has distinguished itself by only weighing 450kg. This makes the RP-1 the lightest sports car in the world.

The open-top two-seater car is built upon a carbon-fibre structural tub, which places the driver in an F1-style feet-up driving position. The new car is equipped with an adjustable seat and pedals to fit drivers even over six-feet tall. The composite construction is maintained throughout the GT-inspired body and interior components.

The two-seater car model is equipped with a 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine which produces 275PS of power and a massive 800Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission with a host of aerodynamic components delivering 200kg of downforce at 160kmph.

If the company produces the concept as promised, and if it actually hits the weight targets, the RP-1 will be more than 160kg lighter than the Atom and 340kg below the X-Bow.

The Elemental RP-1 is scheduled to be formally revealed at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, with production kicking off in the UK as early as next year.
