Scania commercial vehicles India has commenced manufacture of buses at its Naraspura plant near Bangalore. With a total investment of Rs 300 crore, Scania looks to expand its market in the premium commercial vehicle market. The commercial vehicle manufacturer already builds trucks at this facility.
The Swedish CV maker plans to build 1,000 buses at this plant per annum in addition to the 2500 trucks. This brings total production to 3500 units. Scania plans to make India a hub for exports in Asia. Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO, Scania CV said, “The vision for Narasupura is clear it is a world class facility serving both the Indian market and becoming a hub for exports to other markets in Asia. Scania has and remains committed to bringing global technology and manufacturing practices to the countries in which it operates.”
Anders Grundströmer, Managing Director, Scania India and Senior Vice President, Scania Group said, “The establishment of our bus manufacturing facility plays a major role in realizing this vision for India. The facility will accommodate a state-of-the-art bio-gas unit, which will help in producing alternative fuels locally. With this bus plant we are looking at locally assembling buses and coaches in India, and stay true to the vision of Make in India.”
Scania is a small player at present in the Indian CV scene, but is moving from strength to strength. Recently, the Company bagged an order from BGR Mining for 200 mining tippers that will serve at their multiple mining sites. These tippers will be delivered by April 2015.
