Audi beats Mercedes-Benz in global sales in January

Audi outshone its rival Mercedes-Benz last month by registering a 10 per cent increase in it sales globally. This rise in sales is due to a high demand of Audi vehicles in China and United States. The luxury carmaker stated that it sold 1,37,700 cars and SUVs with the world's two largest car markets and Germany all posting double-digit gains.

Audi’s sales success is largely due to its performance in China. The luxury carmaker has sold 15 per cent more vehicles in China and registered a 4.7 percent growth in Europe despite a 13 per cent slide in Russia. The company stated its January sales benefited from strong momentum for the enhanced A3 compact series and the revamped TT sports car.

Commenting on this achievement, Luca de Meo, Chief, Audi Sales, said, "We have made a good start to the year although global economic uncertainties remain.” He further added that January sales laid the ground for another increase in volumes this year.”

Audi is predicted to maintain its lead over Mercedes-Benz with the launch of its new models – the Audi A4 saloon and its flagship Audi Q7 SUV. IHS Automotive forecasts that the Ingolstadt-based luxury carmaker would outsell Mercedes-Benz by approximately 1,78,000 units by 2020.

Mercedes-Benz posted record sales of 1,25,865 models in January, a 14 per cent gain on year-earlier levels.
