The World Car of The Year Awards are the most coveted global automotive awards and the Aston Martin Rapide has walked away with the top accolades in the Design category.

The Aston Martin Rapide has managed what other super car manufacturers haven't, and that is the translation of a two door coupe design on to a four door super sedan platform, while retaining the essence and character of the brand without looking out of place.  Despite the longer body and the addition of two more doors, the Rapide carries off the look with elan.  Reiterating this fact the Aston Martin Rapide recently won the covetted 2011 World Car Design of The Year Award.

Marek Reichman, Director of Design at Aston Martin,  who led the in-house design team which penned the Rapide adds, "Like a race horse standing still, you can see its power and elegance, the shape of Rapide's rear haunches are muscular conveying the power that lies beneath while its low stance produces a powerful look. There is a real sense of proportion with this car,  the new double grill gives more presence on the road while the iconic signature side strake has been lengthened through to the rear doors to enhance its lateral proportions in a subtle, yet elegant way. The car's purity makes it look right from every angle."

Competing for the honour of 2011 World Car Design of The Year were fifty one entries. Incidentally the entries can include contestants for the World Car of The Year Award as well as stand alone entries for this single honour as well. The vehicles have to be on sale in at least one major market between January 1, 2010 and May 30, 2011. Incidentally the The World Car Design of the Year category, and the corresponding award, is meant to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries, and the Rapide is truly a commendable piece of machinery that achieves these parameters in its definite style and aura.

A design panel consisting of five highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors. The jury comprised of some of the biggest names in the automobile business as well as rewowned journalists from Asia and Europe, including our very own ZigWheels Editor-in-Chief, Adil Jal Darukhanawala.
