Daihatsu Copen production version leaked

The Daihatsu Copen is a two-door roadster with an aluminum retractable hardtop that was first  introduced by the Japanese carmaker, Daihatsu, at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show. The Copen was withdrawn from the European market in 2011. However, less than a year later, the Japanese carmaker announced that Copen would return to production, and several teaser images of the new car have now surfaced online.

The original Daihatsu Copen favoured rounded forms, but leaked images of this new car, shows the two-door roadster featuring straighter edges. The Japanese carmaker has confirmed that Daihatsu Copen will boast a customisable composite body. Parts that are fully customisable to the buyer’s taste include the bonnet, boot lid, front and rear bumpers, all four fenders, the rocker panels and the fuel lid.

The Japanese carmaker claims that the new car will benefit from increased torsional rigidity which will not only improve its handling, but also its ride comfort. According to Daihatsu, the power-operated roof of the two-door car will open and close in 20 seconds.

Daihatsu Copen will derive its power from a 12-valve, three-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine which will deliver 64PS of power and a peak torque of 92Nm. The engine will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed super active continuously variable transmission (CVT).

An official reveal of the Dahiatsu Copen will occur next month, with sales slated to commence in 2015.
