India's current best selling car, the Maruti Suzuki Alto, celebrated this Valentine's day in style. Maruti's small soldier raced past a significant production milestone, as the millionth Alto rolled out of the company's plant at Gurgaon.

The Alto has reached the ten lakh car milestone quicker than any - in just seven years and five months, with the last five lakh cars rolling out in just 25 months. In the 2006-07 fiscal, it became the first Indian car to sell over 2 lakh units. The Alto also has the distinction of being India's largest selling car for the last 37 months straight.

The car had received rave reviews for its functionality and features when it was launched in September 2000. In 2003, the Alto was put through a 24-hour endurance run by a leading automobile magazine - an effort which had the car set 13 national records for speed and performance in the process and adding to its popularity.

One of the Alto's largest strengths, which have helped it achieve the milestone, has been the extent of it appeal. The car still garners exemplary sales figures from not only small towns for its attractive price point, but also from urban areas for its city sensibilities. The Indian Alto also sells very well in export markets as varied as the Netherlands, Algeria and Chile.

The Alto's astronomical success was one of the key factors in helping the erstwhile Maruti Udyog Ltd. maintain its edge in India in the face of increasing international competition. The Alto is now the third Maruti car to have crossed the one-million units mark, the other two being the Maruti 800 and the Omni.
