After a long hiatus of two decades Alfa Romeo returned to the US with its 4C sports car last year. The Italian carmaker is now eyeing a bigger share in the US market by wowing one and all with its long-awaited car – the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

This car was unveiled by Sergio Marchionne, CEO, Fiat Chrysler, which is also the parent company of the sportscar manufacturer in Arese near Milan. The Italian car brand plans to use the Giulia as a flagship model to boost its brand sales to 4,00,000 units annually from 2018, as opposed to less than 68,000 that were last year.

The four-door Giulia sedan comes equipped with a six-cylinder engine churning out 510PS of power enabling the car to sprint from 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds. The Giulia has rear-wheel drive, a departure from Alfa Romeo's traditional front-wheel drive that Fletcher notes even brand enthusiasts have long criticised.

Marchionne had become the CEO of Fiat back in 2004 and had intended to relaunch the 110-year-old brand ever since, but had missed on the targets. However, the merger of Fiat with Chrysler last year provided the necessary financial resources, technical capability and global distribution network.

Marchionne unveiled the sedan inside the Alfa Romeo museum next to the disused plant where the brand was founded 110 years ago. The new Giulia will be built in the southern Italian plant in Cassino.

Production of the Giulia is set to begin in the last quarter, with the European launch in the first quarter of 2016, followed by the US roll out.
