The sub-4 metre car category is the hottest thing right now in the Indian automotive scene and it is just going to get hotter with these 6 exciting cars

Datsun redi-GO front

This year’s Indian Auto Expo brought a lot of exciting cars to our notice with a majority of cars that were previewed in the show scheduled for launch this year itself. A few of them has already made it to the market, like the Isuzu D-Max, the Maruti Vitara Brezza, the Innova Crysta, and the Honda BR-V. However, a big chunk of the previewed cars are still being readied for their debut in the country. Below, we list the top five sub-4 metre cars that are worth waiting for.

Datsun redi-GO

Datsun is ready to launch its all-new small car the redi-GO and our first drive impressions reveal some interesting facts about it. The redi-GO is expected to be priced around Rs 2.5-3.5 lakh, which makes it quite desirable. This little Datsun shares the CMF-A platform with the Kwid, which has received tremendous response from buyers, however, the same can’t be said for the Global NCAP. Nonetheless, the redi-GO will be launched next month, in June. The car will be powered by the same 800cc motor as the Kwid, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Volkswagen Ameo

VW’s latest car for the Indian market is up for booking at dealerships, though its launch date is still to be announced, but expected soon. The Ameo features characteristically solid Volkswagen build and quality along with some latest features like the Mirror Link infotainment system on the inside. Under the hood it will share the same set of motors from the Polo, but will initially be launched with a 1.2-litre petrol mill only. However, the diesel motor will be launched at a later stage.

Maruti will be bringing the performance-oriented version of its premium hatchback, the Baleno, soon. The Baleno RS is aimed at the rising number of enthusiasts of the nation who consider the power figures of the current car to be very less compared to the competition. The RS version will bring the all-new BoosterJet motor to the Indian shores. This engine is a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit, like Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost, tuned to produce close to 110bhp of power and 170Nm of torque. The Baleno RS will be competing against the likes of the Abarth Punto and the VW Polo GT TSI. The launch could be expected towards the festive season.

Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon at Auto Expo

Tata’s confidence this year is phenomenal as the manufacturer has planned to launch three products by the end of this year, namely, the Kite 5, the Tata Nexon and the Hexa Crossover. However, the most exciting product, in our opinion, would be the Nexon compact SUV. The way Tata has put the design together is really commendable. The different layers of textures and design elements on the exterior give the Nexon outstanding visual appeal. The insides, too, look well-made and futuristic; however, the Nexon’s biggest draw would be the 1.5-litre diesel motor. This engine will produce 110PS of power and 260Nm of torque and will be mated to a 6-speed manual, all a recipe for fun. Just for the record, these figures excel its other three rivals: the Brezza, the EcoSport, and the Mahindra TUV300. Expect the launch around October-November period.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

Maruti will continue its launch spree with its compact crossover Ignis, which is already on sale in Japan. This premium crossover is expected to be retailed through the Nexa line of premium dealerships, just like the Baleno and the S-Cross. The major design highlights include prominent wheel arches, a boxy overall design, front grille merging into the headlamp, and an overall length of just 3700mm. Inside the Ignis one will get a new dashboard setup, an upright infotainment screen-certain to come with Apple CarPlay support, etc. The Ignis’ launch could also take place in or around the festive season and, just like the Baleno RS, it could also feature the BoosterJet engine along with the expected 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.3-litre DDiS200 motors.

Tata Kite 5

The sedan version of Tata’s recently launched hatchback Tiago is expected to be launched by the end of this year. Dubbed as the “Kite 5,” which is subject to change, it will impress with its sportback/coupe-ish layout. This small car is very attractive to look at and, considering that the Tiago is selling well, it could also follow the same. Power will come from the same set of motors powering the Tiago, though its sportback layout will certainly liberate a lot of usable boot space.

Do watch out for more updates on these exciting upcoming launches.
