2016 Mitsubishi Lancer Sedan Unveiled

Joining hands with Hindustan Motors, Mitsubishi came to Indian shores in 1998 with its Lancer sedan. What was internationally sold as the 7th generation Lancer was the first one to be introduced in India. Available in with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine option, the Lancer was quick to taste success in its class. But unfortunately the glory days for Lancer didn’t last long. Sales of the C-segment sedan kept dwindling over time and but the Japanese car maker continued its efforts till they finally brought the Lancer Cedia off production in 2012.

Mitsubishi has now taken the wraps off the new for 2016 Lancer and with it the brand intends to resurrect the Lancer moniker. Upfront the new Lancer gets a redesigned fascia flaunts LED Daytime Running Lights. The Lancer will continue to look aggressive and sporty in its design language. In terms of equipment too the 2016 Lancer is heavily loaded. In fact, the model that was unveiled internationally come with Bluetooth, automatic climate control and fog lamps as standard equipment even in the base variant. This however won’t be the case in India and Mitsubishi will reduce the list of features on the lower variants to keep the costs in check. Mitsubishi also revealed that the 2016 Lancer will be sold in three variants – ES, SE and SEL.

The 2016 Lancer will sport a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit that produces 148 horses. There is also a 2.4-litre unit on offer which will only come with an AWD option. This unit produces peak power of 170PS. The front-wheel drive Lancer with the 2.0-litre engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission while the AWD version gets a CVT.

In the international market the 2016 Lancer has already been launched and ranges between Rs 12-15 lakh. With Mitsubishi focusing its energies on the Pajero Sport, the Lancer is only expected to make its way to India sometime next year.
