Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it is testing a smart car with self-learning technology on board

JLR develops self-learning car technology

Researchers at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have developed an intelligent self-learning vehicle intended to offer a completely personalised driving experience and help prevent accidents by reducing driver distraction. The intelligent car will have its own on-board ‘Smart Assistant’ to carry out a range of functions to allow the driver to concentrate on driving.

JLR’s intelligent car concept will recognise drivers by their smartphone, and by the time the driver has opened the car door, the mirrors, steering wheel and seat settings will all be set to their individual preferences. The cabin will be pre-set to their preferred temperature, and will automatically change and adjust itself, for instance, if it is raining.

Through the ‘Smart Assistant’ feature, the car will review the driver’s schedule and set the navigation depending on traffic conditions to avoid congestion. It will also predict the driver’s next destination based on their schedule.

Other handy features include Fuel Assist, which can suggest a driver’s preferred filling stations or advise the driver whether they need to fill up the day before a long trip, Predictive Phone Call, which predicts who the driver is likely to call in certain situations, Intelligent Notifications, which allows the car to alert people that the driver will be late and Auto Adaptive Cruise Control, which applies a distance setting learned from the owner’s driving style.

Jaguar Land Rover has not yet confirmed when this technology will be in the hands of consumers, but it says it could happen in the next few years.
