Nearly 20 cars participated in the opening round of the season that was held between June 13th to 15th. Participants were divided in three categories – the IRC 1600 with nine entries, IRC 2000 with three contestants and FMSCI 1600 with five drivers. Aside from these, there were three cars, two Mahindra XUV 5OOs and one Mitsubishi Evo X running solely for top honours.
Round 1 of the 2014 Indian Rally Championship held in Nashik ended with Gaurav Gill securing a win onboard his Mahindra XUV 5OO. Gill ended Day 1 on a high with a 16 second lead over second placed Amitrajit Ghosh. The battle between the two was getting nail biting with every passing stage. Just when things were looking good for Gill, he was penalised for spending additional time in service for repairs. The 1 minute 40 second penalty set him back by quite a margin and it seemed that the veteran had lost the battle for the top spot. But fortunately for him, Ghosh was forced to slow down after he damaged his right rear suspension. Gill finally finished 1 minute 48 seconds ahead of last year’s winner.
The IRC 1600 category too saw some pretty close battle between Hrishikesh Thackersey and Sirish Chandran. Day 1 saw Thackersey pull a hefty lead of 21 seconds ahead. Chandran tried to fight back but couldn’t post better times than Thackersey and had to settle for a second place finish. Druva Chandrashekar took the third step on the podium.
Piloting a Volkswagen Polo, Byram Godrej took top honours in the IRC200 class with Rahul Kantharaj’s Mitsubishi Cedia following closely in second while Sumit Punjabi finished third. Aniruddha Rangnekar took P1 in the FMSCI 1600 class while Adith K C second. The last spot on the podium was secured by Parag Dhhiwar.
Round 2 of the 2014 Indian Rally Championship will be held in Coimbatore between July 11th to 13th.
