The JK Tyre Racing Championship is all set to kick off its motorsport extravaganza in 2013 with three classes namely, the Formula BMW, Volkswagen Polo R Cup and Formula LGB 4.

The Formula BMW series is a single-seater junior racing championship that is run by Euro International for racing graduates to hone their racing talents for championships such as GP2 all the way up to Formula One. The cars are made of carbon-fibre kevlar for a strong and light body shell. Firepower comes from 1.2 litre BMW motorcycle engine that can rev up to 9,250 rpm, and develops 140 horsepower of power. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox that propels the Formula BMW racing car to a top speed of 230km/h. 12 drivers have been selected for the Formula BMW race series in India.

“It is a big honour for Euro International to manage the cars of the JK Tyre Racing Championship 2013. The effort of JK Tyre is incredible and unique in the world of motorsport. The Formula BMW cars have branched off many champions and now will produce the new Indian rising star in motorsport," said, Antonio Ferrari, Team Owner, Euro International.

The Volkswagen’s Polo Cup is a well thought out one-make race series that allows young drivers to develop their skills on the track as an easy to drive racing machine.

The Volkswagen Polo R Cup Car is powered by a 1.4 litre Twincharger Stratified Injection (TSI) petrol engine that is hooked to a water cooled turbocharger and a supercharger. The engine develops 180 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm and 250Nm of torque @ 2,000 – 4,500 rpm and is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox giving this racing car a top speed of 220 km/h. 21 drivers will be competing against each other in the 2013 Volkswagen Polo Cup.

“We are extremely happy to see the increasing number of new drivers registering for our programme every year. We have 13 new drivers this season proving that the sport is not only heading in a right direction of growing in popularity, but also shows how more and more people are accepting motorsport as a career. 2013 is going to be a challenging season for us as we have drivers participating for the first time in a professional tin top racing series who have to be nurtured and shown the right direction of improvement and growth in the field of motorsport,” said, Prithviraj Siddappa, Head of Motorsport, Volkswagen India.

JK Tyre Formula LGB4

The Formula LGB 4 is a stepping stone into single seat racing and remains crucially as an economical form of motorsport across the world. The Formula LGB 4 cars have a chrome molybdenum tubing frame and is powered by the earlier Maruti Suzuki Swift’s 1.3 litre petrol engine that develops 90 horespower and is mated to a five speed manual gearbox. Improvements have been made for the car’s suspension setup, steering geometry and safety. 13 drivers will be taking part in the 2013 season of the Formula LGB 4.

The season opening event for the 2013 JK Tyre Racing Championship is set to be a gala affair at Round 1 of the 17th JK Tyre Racing Championship between July 19 and 21 at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore alongside Round 3 of the Indian National Rally Championship 2013. A bonus this year during the championship in September is an all new street circuit in Srinagar that overlooks the Dal lake!

“I’m reminded of the day in 1997 when JK Tyre National Racing Championship was launched. We had a mission to put Indians on the map of international racing which we achieved in couple of cases by design and by default. Today this packaging from 4-stroke karting to Formula BMW on our own soil gives us a sense of satisfaction and assurance that the next Formula One driver would be totally by design,” said Sanjay Sharma, Head-Motorsport - JK Tyre & Industries.
