Thomas Luthi of Interwetten-Paddock took pole position for the race on Sunday and runner up in last year’s Moto2 championship, Marc Marquez qualified in second place on Saturday qualifying. It was a constant fight for the top spot at the Grand Prix of Qatar, as Luthi, Marquez and Andrea Iannone were in a neck-to-neck battle for the top step of the podium, that went down to the final lap of the race. With Luthi leading the race, Marquez was closing in behind to put pressure on the Swiss rider. Unfortunately for the Interwetten Paddock rider, he went wide and off the track in the final moments the race which was more than enough time for the Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol racer to take the lead. But the race wasn’t over yet.

Iannone was closely following Marquez and it was time for him to join the party. With a few corners left before the chequered flag was waved, Iannone made a move on the Spanish racer to move into the lead, but it was in the home stretch that the course of the race was finally decided. Marquez got a much better exit from the last corner and he slipstreamed to the chequered flag, taking a victory just 0.061 seconds ahead of Iannone.

Pol Espargaro and team-mate Esteve Rabat were fighting for the final place on the podium but it was Espargaro who took the final step on the podium leaving his team-mate to settle for fourth place.

Luthi, who was visibly extremely upset with the race winner for the Spanish rider’s aggressive move on him, took the finish line in fifth place. Marc VDS Racing’s Scott Redding started the race in 13th place but constantly gained positions and took ten points home with a sixth place finish.

Speed Up racing’s Mike Di Meglio, Simone Corsi of FTR, Bradley Smith of Tech 3 and Mika Kallio of Kalex racing completed the top 10 spots.
