One of the oldest motorsport events held in the country under the Sportscraft banner, the Gulf Monsoon Scooter rally successfully celebrated the completion of its second decade this year. The event saw strong participation with MX racers and several enthusiasts racing against time through the arduous terrain of the backwoods near Vashi. Mr. Ravi Chawla, President, Lubricants, Gulf Oil Limited, flagged the 31 participants from Parel. The riders then rode through the city streets towards the eastern side of the city to the outskirts of Navi Mumbai.

Mumbai's motocross veteran and former dirt-track champion Rustom Patel clinched the top honours as he rode fearlessly through the slushy and narrow pathways. Riding a Honda Activa, Rustom was consistent and fast in all the stages as a result of which he comfortably won ahead of second place finisher Ganesh Lokhande with a 2 minutes advantage in penalties. The win has been evading Rustom for past couple of years but this time the resilient rider from Mumbai rode superbly well and emerged victorious over the grueling 35km track with 26 minutes 29 seconds in penalties.

Ganesh Lokhande, who hails from Nashik, finished second with 28 minutes, 34 seconds riding a Kinetic Marvel. Completing the podium in third was Pune-based Snehal Chavan, who also races for Team Pashankar Racing in National motocross, astride a Honda Activa. Snehal was close on the heels of Ganesh Lokhande and he finished the rally with 28.40 seconds in penalties.

Last year's winner and an old hand at the Gulf Scooter rally, Manjeet Singh Bassan, who has won this event four times before in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2008, was unable to repeat his success this year at the 2009 Gulf Scooter rally. During the first two stages it seemed the four-time champion will repeat his performance as he led the rally ahead of Rustom Patel. But a nasty fall in the third sector resulted in him losing precious time and the toughie managed to complete the rally in sixth spot, unhurt and undeterred from the crash.

The Best First Timer award went to Lovepreet Singh astride a Bajaj, who was handed over the Firdosh Vajifdar trophy for his brilliant debut performance. The Best Mumbai Rider trophy went to Mudassir Khatri, who was riding a Honda Dio while the Best Nashik rider prize was awarded to a Kinetic Honda rider Mansingh Thakur. The Best Pune rider trophy was handed to ex-MX champion Yogesh Barguje who was also astride a Kinetic Honda. The Best Thane and Navi Mumbai Rider prize was clinched by Tarak Daiya, riding a Honda Activa.
