Porsche’s Leipzig plant in Germany recently assembled completed assembly of 100,000 second generation Porsche Cayennes. The event has been a curtain raiser to the celebrations of the Leipzig plant’s decade long anniversary. “Ten years ago the success story of Porsche Leipzig started. What was a greenfield site, today ranks among the most modern car plants in the world. In addition to the Cayenne, Leipzig is also where Porsche produces the very successful Panamera luxury saloon, approximately 70,000 units of which have now rolled off the production line. That is why more than 93,800 vehicles left the Porsche plant in Leipzig in 2011, more than in any year before”, says Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board of Production and Logistics of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.

The 100,000th unit of the Cayenne is in white colour and comes with a V8 engine. The car will be shipped to Brazil where it will be sold to its first owner. Currently the Porsche Cayenne is being sold in five variants across more than 124 markets. The Porsche Cayenne is from a rare breed of SUV’s that are as good on the road as they are off it. The base variant of the Porsche Cayenne with a diesel engine churns out 248PS of power while the top of the line 4.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine develops 507PS of power.

Porsche will be introducing a triple production shift pattern soon at the Leipzig plant, which is the next challenge for the plant in the near future. The major expansion plan will see the plant expand over 17 hectares adjacent to the current site. The new facility will be responsible for production of the upcoming Porsche Cajun and will include a paint shop and body assembly line. The new plant will be functional by 2013 when the first Porsche Cajun is scheduled to roll off the line. Porsche is investing 500 million Euro in the new production site that will create 1000 jobs.
