Striking the right balance between performance and efficiency doesn't come easy. Here are five 150cc bikes that provide adequate power to the rider without denting the monthly fuel budget

Time was when 150cc bikes used to be the only ‘sporty’ bikes around, offering performance-deprived Indian youth some cheap speed thrills. In fact, the evolution of high-end bikes took place with the inception of some of the best mid-performers. Now, as the industry has grown with new entrants, styling and power has been rightfully mated with fuel efficiency. Starting from the bottom, here is a lowdown on the fuel efficient mid-performers.

Hero CBZ Xtreme

No 5) Hero CBZ Xtreme; Mileage: 55kmpl

The icon of its times went through a number of facelifts which finally led to the birth of CBZ Xtreme. The break-up between Honda and Hero did not quite affect the bike’s image and cult following. But, at the same time, with its quirky looks it is not the most wanted in our list. With a mileage figure of 55kmpl, the resurrected CBZ does not make it real far with a 12.1 litre fuel tank, however the 14.4PS engine pulls out a decent 12.8Nm of torque and gets a 0-60km/h mark in 5 seconds.

Honda CB Unicorn

No 4) Honda Unicorn; Mileage: 58kmpl

Japanese bike maker, Honda got the balance just right with the Unicorn. Powered by a 149cc petrol engine, it manages to deliver 13.4PS @ 8000rpm with torque figures at 12.7Nm @ 5500rpm. But, despite this, the two-wheeler is just not enough to get a mileage figure higher than 58kmpl. That said, the Unicorn is one reliable and robust machine.

Yamaha FZ16

No 3) Yamaha FZ16; Mileage: 60.3kmpl

While the R15 took 150cc bikes to an all new level, the high price behind the technology did put it on the backseat with the competition. The naked street FZ16 is one off the block, muscular looking, yet a nimble bike that is an affordable good looking machine. Delivering 14PS of power @ 7500 rpm with a maximum torque of 13.6 Nm @ 6000rpm, the FZ took street biking to a new level with its styling and poise. However, the weight of the bike did cut down a bit on efficiency that could have been more than 60.3kmpl.

No 2) Pulsar 150 DTS-i; Mileage: 61kmpl

Currently in its fourth generation, Bajaj has progressed a long way from creating the first affordable 150cc bike. Add to this, the revolutionary twin spark technology delivering more mileage as well as performance. Killer looks, affordable pricing and good fuel economy made the Pulsar a heartthrob for college goers and daily commuters alike. With its 15.06PS of power @ 9000rpm and 12.5Nm of torque @ 6500 rpm, the bike delivered an overall mileage of 61kmpl. With the recently unveiled 200NS, country’s second largest bike maker plans to further extend its monopoly in the premium motorcycle segment in the country.

Suzuki GS 150R

No 1) Suzuki GS 150R; Mileage: 62kmpl

Quite an odd fact for a Bajaj not to land up in the top spot for a simple reason that the GS 150R has that much needed extra cog, not just for better fuel efficiency, but for better overall performance as well. The 14PS of power with the 13.4Nm of torque is just the right balance with the match of 62kmpl of overall fuel efficiency. Couple that to the tank capacity of 15.5 litres and the GS150R can take you 900km on a single tankful! Now that’s more like a winner!
