JLR at the sales forefront again as Tata Motors awaits new domestic products

Range Rover Sport

Tata Motors Group clocked 75,026 units globally in the month of April 2014. The single largest contributor to the Group’s sales again has been Jaguar Land Rover.

JLR cumulatively sold 40,137 units, 34,433 of which come from Land Rover. Jaguar numbers stand at 5,704 units. JLR sales are up 39 percent in April 2014 to the same period last year. Commercial vehicle sales of Tata Motors group may be facing the heat for a few years now but it still is the second largest contributor to the company with sales of 27,054 units. These include sales of Tata Motors and the Tata Daewoo JV.

Global wholesales of Tata Motors vehicles stood at 7,835 units in April 2014. Over the years, Tata Motors has slipped down the sales charts first being overtaken by Mahindra and recently by Honda. Toyota is close on the Indian carmakers heels as well. The upcoming Bolt hatchback and Zest compact sedan show a lot of promise and could resurrect the struggling carmaker on the domestic front. The Zest will be the first car to sport a AMT gearbox mated to a diesel engine promising very high levels of efficiency.

On the commercial vehicles front, the entire industry is facing tough economic conditions. CV makers are resting their hopes on a stable government rescuing the economy from its current state and turning around the fortunes for the transportation industry. Despite current market conditions, Tata Motors recently launched nine new products in the CV segment and also brought truck racing to India with its Prima trucks. This is an initiative mainly to improve industry sentiment and create driver interest as the CV industry is falling woefully short of drivers.
