After shifting the City's production, sales will increase once Honda adds a second shift

Honda City production commences in Tapukara

Honda announced last month that the company had decided to shift production of the City to Tapukara in Rajasthan to make way for the Mobilio. The company has now resumed the City’s production at its new plant and dispatch of a fresh batch built here has commenced. Honda also manufactures the Amaze at this facility.

The City has had a dream run since its launch, consistently clocking over 7,000 units per month. These numbers though cannot be sustained till Honda adds a second shift at the plant. Work on commencement of the second shift is underway. Till then Honda estimates about 5,000 units production of the City per month. Only other way to increase this number is by allocating more production time for the City over the Amaze. This could increase waiting periods of the City temporarily.

The Japanese carmaker has a single flexible assembly line that can produce any of their models manufactured in India. This line is being used at its optimum capacity in a single shift. Once the second shift starts though, expect Honda to double sales of the City and Amaze if there is that much demand for these cars.

That brings Honda to early 2015 when the launch of the new Jazz is expected. While the company hasn’t revealed production plans for the premium hatchback yet, we presume it should be made at this new Tapukara facility as most bits used in the Jazz from the diesel engine to the interior components, which it shares with the City, are fitted at this plant. The Greater Noida facility meanwhile will focus on the Mobilio, which is off to a fantastic start. The Mobilio RS goes on sale next week.
