After prolonged delay, Mahindra finally showcased its production-spec Mojo at the 2014 Auto Expo. We take a closer look at the flagship offering scheduled for a June 2014 launch

Mahindra Mojo at 2014 Auto Expo

When Mahindra first showcased the Mojo in 2012, it created quite a stir among the Indian two-wheeler enthusiasts, some owing to its technical specifications and some due to its quirky styling. Surprisingly though, instead of launching the bike even after announcing the prices, Mahindra decided to postpone the launch by few years to further develop the bike. By late 2013, spy pictures of the Mojo being tested started surfacing on the internet thus sending the message that Mahindra were all set to launch the bike soon. At the 2014 Auto Expo, Mahindra finally unveiled the production ready Mojo. The Mahindra flagship has gone through a few design changes from the first model that was showcased a few years ago.

The headlight fascia has been reworked and the twin headlamps receive a separate body shell of their own with DRL (Daytime Running Lights). The tank has also been redesigned with a knee recesses and it now flows better with the overall silhouette of the bike. The LED turn indicators integrated in the mirrors, which were present in the older model, have been given a miss in the production model. It has retained the “gold ribs” (two horizontal golden bars below the tank), which is also seen on the Mahindra Centuro. The basic silhouette of the Mojo has been maintained on the new model and the subtle updates have made it more visually pleasing.

The bike is powered by a 295cc liquid - cooled, single-cylinder engine fed through an electronic fuel-injection system producing 26PS @ 8500rpm and 24Nm @ 7000rpm from its over-square cylinder dimensions. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a six-speed transmission. Apart from boasting adequate performance figures, the Mojo had been loaded with goodies in its cycle parts bin and gladly Mahindra has retained all of them. The bike has been equipped with features like USD front forks, gas charged mono shock, LED pilot lamps and tail lamps, Pirelli Sport Demon tyres and petal discs.

The Mojo features a digital speedometer and analogue tachometer along with a shift indicator.  Exhaust gases are expelled through a one-into-two exhaust system that ends in two chunky cans – one on either side of the bike. The wide handlebars along with a centre-set foot pegs will translate into an upright and comfortable stance for the rider on the Mojo, which should be beneficial while touring but it will also translate to pronounced windblast at higher speeds.

The Mojo employs tubular frame, which should endow it with superior handling dynamics and agility but whether it will be quick on its feet can be only gauged after we get to ride the bike. Mahindra hasn’t announced any details regarding the Mojo’s pricing but we estimate it to be between Rs 1.5-1.75 lakh and a June 2014 launch. At this pricing, the Mojo will be pitched against the likes of the KTM 390 Duke, which has better performance figures and the Honda CBR 250R, which has superior touring credentials. The main hurdle for the Mojo is that it has been delayed by close to four years from the time it was first showcased. And in the interim, other manufacturers have flooded the market with their offerings in this segment and it will be an up-hill task for the bike to sway potential buyers towards itself.
