Till not too long ago, Aston Martin models in the 1:18 scale were considered to be rare and not many model car companies thought it was important enough to represent this iconic brand in a 1:18th scale. In the last year and a half though, both Autoart and Welly have decided to make a whole bunch of new models. The 2013 Aston Martin DB9 featured here is made by Welly and costs Rs 2999 and is available in most large toy stores in the country.
The new DB9 is a beautiful car and Welly has completely nailed the look with its 1:18th rendition. The exteriors are very good and the shut lines are some of the best seen from Welly ever. In fact, some of the lines on this car are better than those seen on cars more than three times its price. The front grille though clearly demonstrates why this car is a midrange model. The chrome, although accurate, is not the best quality and imperfections are rather obvious. The bad chrome seems to plague this car in general affecting critical parts like the side trim and the exhaust tips. The tail lights and head lights though are quite well detailed and showcase the difference in detail a budget car maker like Welly has achieved in recent years.
One of the best reasons to buy this car though is the wheels. The overall size is bang on and although we would have liked the detail on the callipers a little more, the wheels themselves are extremely well crafted. As with some of their newer cars, Welly offers fully functional and independent suspension on the 2013 Aston Martin DB9. The best part about the wheels though is the centre caps with the Aston Martin logo on them making them look as realistic as possible.
The interior too is well crafted and displays a definite improvement in the quality of Welly models. Although we would have liked a carpeted interior and a slightly more detailed interior in general, the price point at which this model comes at is quite nice. The same can be said about the engine compartment. The first thing that strikes you is the recreation of the small plaque that states “Hand Built In England” with the name of an engine builder on it. The engine bay too is well depicted and replicates the real car extremely well. The big 6.0-litre V12 engine is well crafted and not just a piece of moulded plastic.
As we mentioned, there are not many modern Aston Martin models available and this is by far the cheapest one you can find. Welly does make a slightly higher version of this same car under the FX Models line but unluckily we haven’t seen the FX Model brand make it to India. On the whole, model enthusiast or not, this is certainly not a model that should be missed out on.
