Women’s Day 2014: Top 5 driving tips for women

Increasingly, as women take up more exciting lifestyles be it on the work or personal front, the need for personal transportation too is on a rise. It's not uncommon these days in both bigger and smaller towns to find more women driving. And that's a good thing because most women drivers are quite passive and non-aggressive, making them ideal road users. But whatever said and done, women still need to keep some key things in mind when on the road. This women's day, we list out top 5 things one needs to keep in mind when on the road.

1. Know your car

It's very important, and not just for women but drivers in general to know their cars.  Basic things like how to change a spare or even replacing a head lamp bulb goes a long way in making motoring less troublesome as one doesn't have to wait endlessly by the side of the road for assistance. It is also important to know where the tools and papers are for the car, particularly if the car is used by more than one person. To know how to check the coolant, oil and washer fluid levels are a must too.

2. Make your car your companion

You car is your personal space; keep it clean not only from the outside but also from the inside. Leaving bits and pieces lying around on the carpets or in cubbyholes is not only detrimental to how the car looks on the inside but can also be a safety hazard. There have been numerous instances where bottles or stray objects have rolled under the pedals causing accidents that could have been avoided.

3. Choose a good pair of shoes

High heels are NOT good driving shoes. Your sparkling set of Jimmy Choo’s might look good on the runway but in a car they are as useless as a pair of flippers. If you have to dress up and drive, make sure you equip your car with a flat soled shoe of some sort that you can change into while driving. One can always change shoes at the destination.

4. No distractions while driving

While it is ok to reach to your satellite navigation or infotainment panel to browse through music or set a destination, try not to do these when you are in motion. Similarly, most activities that ends up distracting you from doing the actual act of driving safely, like having a sip of water or a bite to eat are best avoidable. It's equally important to be aware of your surroundings while driving, nonetheless. It's not uncommon for women drivers to be followed. If in such a situation, make sure you are always on a busy road. A good habit here would also be to inform someone in the family of the situation. It's also a good idea to inform someone about the time of departure and the route that would be followed every time you get into the car. This way, if there's a breakdown or any other sort of trouble, it would be easier and quicker to get help.

5. Avoid altercations on the road

If you get into a minor accident or altercation on the road, don't step out of the car and keep your windows rolled up. Also, avoid getting into an argument and choose to call the cops instead of trying to sort out things with the other party on the road. If such an event takes place at night or on a secluded road, call someone you know and drive to the closest police station and ask them to meet you there. Don't hang around.
