Just off the top
Somethings you should check often in your car are the fluid levels - engine oil, brake fluid, coolant and even the windshield washer fluid. These keep your car running healthily and ensure that you won’t have a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Another important safety aspect is wheels and tyres - they’re what keep your car on the road. Check if they’re correctly inflated and if the tread hasn’t worn down too much. Occassionally give all the wheel lugnuts a good tighening with a spanner - you don’t want the wheel coming off at highway speeds. Once in a while, be sure you peer under the car to ensure it’s not leaking any fluids from anywhere - those could be the tell-tale signs of a bigger problem. Lights are of the utmost importance. Not only do they help you see in the dark, but they also help other motorists spot your car in the dark. Make sure ALL of them work. Lastly, make it a habit of checking whether the doors are actually locked each time you lock them - you wouldn’t want anyone nicking anything from the inside would you?
Catch that latch
Seatbelts are your first line of defence in a crash. Make sure they move smoothly in either direction, but when you give a sharp tug, it should instantly lock in place. Ensure the buckle works properly and smoothly without any creaks.
Don’t forget boot-camp
Always make sure your car’s boot packs all the necessary equipment. The spare wheel should be in place and properly inflated. The tool kit, jack and tommy, safety triangle, first aid kit and spare bulbs are absolute must-haves in the boot.
