The most hotly contested category in the 2010 ET ZigWheels Car of the Year awards, the Premium Hatchback of the Year, is promptly won by the Ford Figo, besting such world-class contenders like the Volkswagen Polo, the Chevrolet Beat and the Nissan Micra

Looks, performance, practicality - the Figo has all its bases covered
What Ford pulled off with the Figo was nothing short of genius. A practical car which looks good, drives quite well and is priced to destroy the competition. While both the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel powered Figos don’t have the most modern engines in the segment, nor do they have a very upmarket feel about them, they are by far the most practical hatches of the lot and very easily recommendable to anyone in the market for a sensible and more importantly, affordable, hatchback.

The strongest suite of the Figo is price though, which undercuts the competition by quite a margin

One look at the contenders in the premium hatchback space for 2010, and it was quite clear that the car that could beat such tough competition within its own segment had a great chance of taking the outright honours as well. The Ford Figo did exactly that, beating the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, the Nissan Micra and the Chevorlet Beat in the process. What ultimately made the Figo win the Premium Hatchback of the Year award was its phenomenal value for money proposition, while at the same time not compromising on either the ride quality, drive excitement or practicality.

Good looking and competent in many departments, the Micra doesn't really blow anyone's mind though

Nissan finally made its foray into the hatchback segment with the Micra. Previously known as the March, this cheeky little car has been designed keeping in mind the fact that the car will be sold in various markets worldwide with differing tastes. Stylish, up market with funky interiors and quite a hoot to drive, this little Nissan is quite a contender.

The Beat is certainly funky looking and a good option for those young 'uns

The biggest achievement of the Beat is its 1.2-litre engine, which dwarfs the competition in terms of its performance. The overall design of the exteriors and interiors in the Beat is also very futuristic, which might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but definitely increases its appeal massively for the young buyer. Overall, it’s a great city car which is not only making waves in India, but around the world as well and heralds the new design direction that GM has embarked on.

Definitely the hottest looking and most fun to drive car of the bunch, the VW Polo loses out thanks to its high price point

Despite aggressive pricing from VW’s point of view, the Polo can still be seen as being pricey from the ever-demanding Indian buyer. But it is very easy to see where all that money has gone in. From the safe, secure and sure-footed feel, to the potent and delectable chassis, right up to the well turned out interiors - if there was a car built for feel good in this lot, it is the Volkswagen Polo. The new 1.6-litre petrol engine give it the firepower it needs, but it still isn’t enough to take top honours in this category.
