Life turns full circle and some time around that circumference, we tend to stray off-path only to finally get right back on track. New cars from Mercedes’ stable have just turned that full circle, be it the new A-Class, the recently revealed C-Class or the uber-luxurious S-Class. The E-Class wandered away to a not so attractive land but four years down its path, the E is back.
In June last year, Mercedes launched the seemingly new E-Class in India. It was a thoroughly well executed facelift that seriously made us consider the E-Class for the best luxury car of the year. Over 2,000 new components, mainly on the design front gave the new E-Class that much needed sought-after image.
The E-Class has been understated in the past but with the refresh, it cries out loud for attention like an ignored supermodel. Isn’t that what the luxury car buyer wants? A good- looking car and a supermodel sitting shotgun. The LED daytime running lights are unmistakable for an E and it looks almost as menacing as its AMG cousin with the large air intakes and chin spoilers. The beefier rear with the twin chrome tipped exhausts and new alloy wheels give the E-Class a more youthful appearance.
Mercedes dropped the 3.0-litre E350 CDI from the line-up with the refresh, which is a shame, but it wasn’t doing the numbers for Mercedes in India so it is understandable. The four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills are both, well- refined, adequately quick and are now the only engines on offer, besides the 5.5-litre V8 in the E63 AMG of course.
The E-Class was never known to be a spirited car to drive but a few minor updates to the chassis in the refreshed E has given it a bit of dynamic flair. The precise electro-mechanical steering and the slightly stiffer suspension make it a better driver's car. Turning the E-Class into a complete luxury package are a host of features coming in with the updates. Eight airbags, active bonnet, start-stop, active park assist, attention assist, the list goes on.
Luxury has always been a given with the E-Class. Desirability and a sensible overall package further enhance the highest-selling three-pointed star’s appeal and that’s why it’s our Luxury Car of the Year.
