Third coming of the awards receives applause from all quarters of the industry at glitzy gala in Mumbai

The ceremony for the ET-ZigWheels Car and Bike of the Year Awards concluded at a grand evening in Mumbai on January 21, 2011. Inviting, recognizing and celebrating the best from the Indian automotive sphere in the past year, the awards ceremony was as much a joyful coming together of stalwarts of the industry, as it was an insight into the blooming and thriving Indian automotive culture. The Ford Figo walked away with three prizes including the ZigWheels.com Viewers Choice Car of the Year, and the overall 2010 Car of the Year award, while the Yamaha SZ-X won both the top awards in the bikes category. Toyota Kirloskar Motor was awarded the Car Maker of the Year, while Hero Honda walked away with the Bike Maker of the Year trophy for the second year in a row.

The evening was presided over by Dr Bhaskar Das, Executive President, The Times of India, and Adil Jal Darukhanawala, Editor-in-Chief, ZigWheels. The show began with an insight from Dr Das on the progress and the challenges before the Indian automotive industry. “Today is a time of acknowledging good work and picking the truly great from among them all. This is where we pride ourselves on our scientific processes, our technical expertise, our domain knowledge and also the clear cut onus on fair play, which have so far marked our existence to date.”

The awards nite was hosted by Miss World Diana Hayden at the ITC Grand Central in Parel, and was graced by the star power of automotive enthusiast and Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal, who was the Guest of Honour. The who’s who of the Indian automotive industry was left in splits by the hilarious stand up comedy act of Papa CJ. The evening also saw members of the Mahindra Racing team head up on stage and interact with Adil Jal Darukhanawala about their entry into the world of Grand Prix motorcycle road racing, with the first entry by an Indian bike maker in this field.
