Delphi's new compact, lightweight and efficient Vehicle Sound Generator will enable Electric Vehicles (EVs) to alert pedestrians, children and cyclists about its presence

Delphi Vehicle Sound Generator system for electric vehicles

Electric vehicles may be eco friendly but they sure aren’t friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. The lack of an engine note due to the lack on an internal combustion engine means the only noise from a moving EV is tyre noise, which is not enough to alert those in its vicinity.

Delphi’s Vehicle Sound Generator is a compact and light weight single box high fidelity sound generating unit that can be mounted in the engine bay of a vehicle. The unit measures in at 10x10 centimetres. The unit features a 32-bit microprocessor with flash memory and an audio class-D amplifier. It uses 90 per cent less power than a traditional multi-box system and is three times lighter at just 450 grammes.

The Delphi Vehicle Sound Generator can provide a frequency of 300Hz to 10 Hz and can be configured to reproduce engine notes as preferred by individual car makers. The unit can also be configured to enable multiple warning sounds while detecting a pedestrian on a collision course.

Delphi’s Vehicle Sound Generator will be used by five different vehicles and will help hybrid and electric vehicle makers comply with upcoming legislations in various countries that will make a Vehicle Sound Generator mandatory to alert pedestrians, cyclists and children.
