Taking a page out of BMW, Audi has announced that they are going to introduce stop-start system in its cars, a technology which will be available from the later part of this year. The system, first to be introduced in Audi's A3 1.4 TFSI, A4 and A5 in 2.0-litre form will improve fuel consumption and Co2 emission.
Audi claims that the stop-start system can be switched off completely and it can help reduce Euro cycle fuel consumption by 0.2 liters per 100 kilometers. The particular device will work by cutting the engine when the car is stationery - such as in congestion or at traffic lights. The driver will also have an option to switch off the system at any time by pressing a button.
Apart from this system, Audi has also launched an on-board computer system that that will monitor the driver's habits and recommend new tactics to reduce fuel consumption. These two new systems join Audi's energy recovery system, which captures energy normally lost to braking and therefore reduces strain on the engine from the alternator. Audi expects to improve overall vehicle efficiency to some 20 percent by the year 2012.
Although the German manufacture is a little way behind the competition with the technology - BMW has had the system available in some of its cars for a year already - it does beat rival Mercedes who won't offer stop-start in its cars until mid 2010.
