Antifreeze is commonly referred to as coolant which has to be topped up in the coolant dispenser a car. A 50/50 mixture of Coolant or antifreeze and water is ideal in the radiator of a car. In earlier times water was used around the passages of an engine to keep the engine cool. Cars operate in very different conditions across the world. From well over 100 F in desserts to below freezing temperatures in snow. The liquid that is used to cool the engine cannot evaporate or freeze because if it does the cooling system will not work and the engine will overheat until it ceases. Nowadays antifreeze or coolant is used cool the engine as this mixture of water and ethylene glycol (coolant) has a boiling point that is much higher than that of water at 235 F, and has a freezing point that is well below that of the freezing point of water at -55 C. As a result cars today can maintain stable engine temperatures whether they are driven in subzero temperatures or in scorching desserts.
