Lewis Hamilton has made it three wins in a row for McLaren as he won the Italian Grand Prix in dominant style, but the star of the race was no doubt Sergio Perez with a superb second place ahead of Fernando Alonso!

Italian GP - race day

It seems like McLaren is the team to beat as Formula 1 leaves Europe for the remainder of the 2012 season, as Lewis Hamilton’s pace proved throughout the Italian Grand Prix weekend. Monza is traditionally an extremely fast track much similar in character to the previous round in Spa. Right from FP1 it was clear that the Mercedes-powered cars would have an advantage, and from there on it was down to aerodynamics. The boys from McLaren looked super strong too with the MP4-27’s clean aerodynamics (read as no platypus nose) aiding the car’s straight line speed in Monza.

But it wasn’t just the McLaren that was fast – Mercedes GP as well as Force India looked super quick too throughout qualifying, with Paul di Resta, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg lining up 4th, 5th and 7th on the Saturday time sheets. di Resta though had a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change while Nico Hulkenberg’s car broke down in Q1 negating Force India’s advantage. But at the top of the order were the two McLarens with Hamilton taking pole from Jenson Button and a very quick Felipe Massa in third place.

The other team that was quick in Monza was undoubtedly Ferrari and had Alonso not suffered a problem in Q3 he could have just been the quickest man in qualifying, but instead lined up in tenth. The Red Bulls were already having a bad weekend with the Renault engine not only down on power, but the RB8s running a smaller KERS system and shorter gearing as well. But qualifying is only half the battle in F1!
