Mercedes AMG W03 launch

Prior to the start of the second pre-season test in Barcelona today, Mercedes-Benz pulled the covers off their Formula 1 car – the F1 W03. The development of the W03 started last year even before the 2011 season was half way through.

The 2012 Silver Arrow car will see some distinctive changes to keep the car in sync with the new rules and regulation of the 2012 season. Similar to the other cars that will be seen on the grid, with the exception of McLaren, the W03 will also host a stepped nose and has also been modified according to the new restrictions concerning the position of the exhausts.

Mercedes AMG driver Nico Rosberg was the first of the two drivers to take the car for a spin on the Silverstone circuit. “The car looks good, and is very nicely packaged under the bodywork - all the parts are in harmony, which reflects how well the different departments of our team are working together. From the beginning of our running, we have been able to focus on understanding the car and making good progress with our test programme. It will be very interesting to learn more about where we stand in the next few weeks," the German driver said.

Although the new car carries nearly 200 parts more than its predecessor, its core weight is lesser than the W02. Its superior packaging and efficiency comes as an added advantage.

“When we were driving the F1 W03 for the very first time, it instantly gave us good feedback and sensations. Starting today, we will work intensively to make it a competitive runner,” Seven-time Champion Michael Schumacher said.

Following the car launch, the car will make its 2012 debut on Tuesday at the second pre-season test in Barcelona. With the new car in place, and all set to roll on the track, Mercedes AMG aim to improve their position in 2012 over the fourth place at which they concluded the 2011 season.
