| It doesn't matter that he's a former Formula One World Champion, it doesn't matter that he is on his fourth trip to India since 2008. The question right now on everybody's mind is where Lewis Hamilton |
| is headed next season |
Strong rumours are linking Hamilton to a possible move to Mercedes GP next season to
replace Michael Schumacher, who is all set to retire at the end of the season. The first
question put forth to Hamilton, in Mumbai for the Vodafone Speed Fest at the Bandra-Kurla
Complex on Sunday evening, was not surprisingly about Mercedes.
The Brit, however, kept his cards close to his chest. "No, I haven't committed to any
team as yet. I don't have a timeline either. I won my first world championship with
McLaren (in 2008) and I am happy with their background, the people and environment there,"
Hamilton said here on Sunday.
The rumour mills and the British media though are still buzzing with Hamilton's eminent
departure. "There have been a lot of speculations and rumours about my move to Mercedes.
But I am happy with McLaren. We have a great car and we are in a position to challenge the
top teams. We are definitely in with a chance to win the championship," Hamilton
said.
The 2008 champion will be making his first visit to the country after his disappointing
show at the inaugural Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit last year.
"It is great to be back in India again and for the first time I'll be racing in the
night, so that should be a new experience. I have always received plenty of love and
appreciation from the people here and expect a lot of support today," Hamilton, who drove
the McLaren MP4-27 on the streets of Mumbai, said.
One thing that the McLaren driver, who is second in the world championship with 142
points, is apprehensive is driving on the Indian streets. "I think driving in UK is scary
enough, the traffic on M-25 is crazy. But I don't think I can drive in Indian traffic. You
need special talent for that," he said.
Asked who will hold the upperhand if he had to compete with Narain Karthikeyan on the
Indian roads, Hamilton said, "There are no two ways about it, Narain will definitely win.
He'll kick my butt on the Indian roads."
