| Ferrari launched its 59th Formula One machine for the 2013 season, named the F138, at its headquarters in Maranello on February 1, 2013 |
Italian team, Ferrari, has launched its 2013 competitor, the F138, which is their 59th
Formula One car. The ‘13’ in the name F138 stands for the current year, and
eight denotes the eighth and final year of the V8 engine in Formula One.
The F138 is a not just an evolution from the F2012 but a complete transformation to a
gorgeous looking Formula 1 car. It sports a ‘model paneling’ to cover the
largely criticised stepped nose, and the red livery has streaks of black. The new colour
scheme has been applied to disguise the design features at the front and around the
exhaust.
While rival team McLaren has incorporated Ferrari’s pull rod suspension at the
front of the MP4-28, the F138 has been integrated with pull-rod suspension both in the
front as well as at the rear. The rear end of the new F138 has been built to allow
modifications in the positioning and exhaust layout.
The air intake mounted above the cockpit and on the side pods have been revised to
boost the aerodynamics of the car. The DRS rear wing has been revised and optimised
in accordance with the new regulations that will be enforced this season. Detailed changes
have been made to the design of the brake ducts and on the overall braking
system.
However, the Italian squad said that ‘the aerodynamic elements shown on the car
are only those from the initial phase of development: significant modifications will be
introduced in the weeks to come’.
A great amount of effort has gone into reducing the weight and size and at the same
time in increasing the performance of a lot of its components. As far as the electronics
of the car are concerned, Ferrari has introduced the single control unit on the F138,
which will be used by most teams in the 2014 season.
With testing almost a week away, and a little over a month left for the Australian
Grand Prix, the Maranello-based squad is determined to make the F138 as efficient as
possible with the aim of winning the Drivers and Constructor’s Championship this
year. Felipe Massa will be the first to drive the F138 during the pre-season tests at
Jerez de la Frontera circuit from February 5, 2013.
