Following a mandate in the 2012 FIA General Assembly, the FIA has now confirmed the members of the newly formed Drivers’ Commission one of them being Indian race driver Karun Chandhok. The Drivers’ Commission was confirmed at the World Motor sport Council (WMSC) meeting on March 8, 2013 and will be headed by to-time Formula 1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi as its President and rally driver Sebastien Loeb as its Vice-President.

The Drivers’ Commission will have representatives from four groups representing different disciplines of motorsport including single-seater racing, Sports Cars, GT, Touring Car, and Rallying. The plan to set up this commission was made last year after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted recognition to the FIA as a Federation. Apart from representing the rights of drivers within the FIA, the newly formed commission will maintain contact with the IOC Athletes Commission and other international federations. 

Karun will join former Marussia test driver Maria de Villota and 1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell to represent the rights and interests of drivers in Single-seater racing. Although Karun’s spent only a season in F1 with a race seat in the 2010 season, its his popularity in the paddocks and his ability to be articulate about his extensive knowledge about the sport that makes him the perfect representative for this commission

Hailing from a motorsport background where his grandfather Bharat Indu Chandhok was the founder of the Federation Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI) and Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), while his father continues his reign as the current FMSCI President, Karun's latest achievement is a recognition of his genuine merit as a modern day motorsport personality. His presence in the FIA Drivers' Commission would give Indian motorsport a voice and more importantly, Indian drivers a tremendous boost in confidence.
