Hyundai i20: First Drive

Hyundai i20: First Drive

The i20 has landed and we took it for a spin. Here are some initial observations.

If there ever was an event that could lift our spirits during an extremely slow automotive season when launches have been postponed to the next year, it's the arrival of the i20 - thank you Hyundai! The Korean carmaker has been on a rampage with its entry level small car - the i10 - first with the 1.1 litre iRDe engine and then with the peppy, powerful and frugal 1.2 litre Kappa powerplant.

Moving up a notch in the small car segment is the brand new i20 - positioned straight against the likes of the Suzuki Swift and Chevrolet U-VA and also targeting the Indica Vista on one end and the Skoda Fabia on the other.

Hyundai i20 launched! And it costs...

The car is extremely good looking - a design theme that is fresh and carries on from Hyundai's i10 design philosophy with bug-eye protruding headlights and a curvy body from front to back. The cute appearance of the i20 is well-balanced by muscular hints like the ridge along the centre and sides of the bonnet as well as the slightly flared wheel arches.

The car looks big and radiates an imposing aura of being spacious on the inside as well - which it is! Leg room abounds and the car can seat five people comfortably enough. But what really takes you by surprise is the cavernous boot at the back. This hatch has enough there to put a few sedans to shame!

I owned a swift (bright red) for 2 years and have driven it for 12,000 kms. I even went for 750 kms long drive from Chennai to Kerala and back. It is a good car indeed. But the interiors of swift are not satisfactory and moreover there is rattle sound which I was unable to get rid off. But overall I was very much satisfied with the cars performace. One month back I decided to change my car. Hence I went for a test drive of i20, and the car's looks made me fall for it head over heels. Its interiors and features are top notch which only a luxury sedan can offer. The gear and steering is butter smooth and the car is not underpowered at all. Let me explain to you, why it is so. Swift and i20 have similar 4 cylinder, 16 valve engines. Though i20 is 101 cc lesser than swift, i20 throws 80PS of power at 5200RPM. 0.987PS = 1BHP. Hence 80PS = 78.96BHP. So i20 essential takes 65.86 RPM to produce 1BPH power and swift takes 68.97 RPM to produce the same power. Which means i20 is potentially able to produce more power than the swift at a given RPM. Hence the overall pickup is quite good. I am not sure about the top speed. Though the car a a little pricey, it has all the features that no other luxury hatch can offer at that price range. | Reply

According to a British auto magazine, a Swift will retain 38% of its original purchase price after 3 years whereas this # for i20 is 49%. Service cost for 3 years for Swift is 61% higher in comparison to i20. No wonder, Maruti owners need more service facility. One will be spending about 19% more on petrol for Swift than i20, hence i20 is more environment friendly than Swift, and insurance for i20 is cheaper than Swift. WOW, that is a lot for a family car. | Reply

I got my new i 20 Asta on 26.02.2009 and I have no words to say about the commitments of OSL Hyundai, of Orissa. I am very much thankful to the dealer and especially the sober deal of sales executives of the dealer. After driving the car I feel great and did no wrong with my decission. At present some modifications might have done in the car , so the i20 gives much pleasure todrive. Above all i20 is the stylist one in this segment, which is the matter of pride for a owner. Finally, I can suggest all the i20 seekers , go forward without any hesitation and confusion,it can be best buy with value for money. | Reply

Technologically advance cars don't require much maintenance except regular oil change and air filter. People don't have time to spend in dealership and engine is the most important part of a good car. As per report, Hyundai spent over 1/2 billion $ to develop Kappa engine, so it can extract more power from every drop of petrol, all most no maintenance for 200,000 miles, run cool and smoothly, auto adjustment of drive belt tension (so no loss of power after few months), less NV means less maintenance. Kappa engine can give fuel economy of maruti 800 if you are a good driver. Whereas Swift 1.3 petrol engine is technologically generations old and may not lost more than 100,000 miles even after repair, just like Maruti 800 engine. Maruti cars require lot more visits to dealership and that is why there huge dealership network is a big positive. Maruti best part is they always make a LXI model, which is bare bone with only A/C and no safety features even rear defogger and steering wheel adjustment. Only reason Honda and Toyota, made GM and Ford see red since 1980s is excellent quality, reliability and low maintenance. Guys move on from 1970s and 80s mentality when buying a car. | Reply

To understand, how a car brand is doing in real world market, go to USA, the world's most competitive auto market. Stand by a roadside for an hour and you will see hundreds of Hyundai pass by but you may not see a single Suzuki in 30 days, though Suzuki have dealership. Suzuki is more popular in 3rd world countries. In India, important car buying criterion is initial price, fuel economy and # of service places, because cars break down so often like old Ambassadors. Whereas in advance auto markets they have a concept of Total Car Ownership Cost in 5 years, which includes initial cost, comfort level, fuel cost, maintenance cost, resale value (depreciation), insurance, then they calculate cost per mile, considering car is driven 12,000 miles per year. Most cars have 5 year bumper to bumper warranty, so if any thing major goes wrong, it is done free by dealership and they provide a free and similar rental car for that duration. | Reply

To those of the serious buyers , do check what they are offering in terms of engine and at what price ? to expensive. doe shyundai I-20 deserve this price certainly not . For one moment are they anywhere near toyota or honda in terms of its generation ahead technology. Hyundai is totally making fool to Indian customers , not convinced above all the seating capacity for five adults not good enough sepcially at back seats. just design cant win alone , its has to be total package. | Reply

I ve booked one after checking the car on all parameters & has proven worthy in terms of looks, performance , engine etc . I ve had a reasonably good experience with my accent earlier & hope this buy would also prove to be one . Everybody has a right to share their opinion good or bad but let us give the car some time in the indian market and then judge rather pulling it down before it is thoroughly tested by the market.I totally disagree with some one who says that hyundai is not faring well in some other countries hance it is abad product , the indian market is totally different has compared to states, europe etc . | Reply

It is true that Hyundai does not have a great name in international market. But its also true that the Quality of Hyundai has been increasing becoming better and brand name being improvised as time is passing by. ( Even Toyota had a very bad reputation in early eighties - until they came out with their record breaking camry - that changed the image and quality standard of the company). I have not test driven the car , so cannot comment on the performance, As far as value is concerned- It DOES NOT seem like a value for money car- Had it been 1 lakh cheaper , it would have been a great buy. Personally , the worthiness of all commodities is decided by the price tag on it. It may be a great product , but if u price it through the roof- what is the point? | Reply

I went for a test drive on i20. I somehow did not like the car, it does not look so roomy as claimed, and the console and all was not that great. I have a Palio 1.6 GTX, wanted to replace that, but somehow could not see a value add of 2lacs over GTX | Reply

I have test driven the vehicle last weekend. There are basic flaws in the i20: 1. The driver seat position hampers the view of the road ahead even when raised 2. The glove box is so deep that it intrudes into the leg space of the front passenger. Even with legs folded, the glove box hits ur knee 3. The cup holder intrudes into the back seat. Also, the back seat ergonomics makes it incapable of seating 3 adults abreast 4. The Kappa engine is great for the i10. with the i20 and the price demanded, its plain robbery I agree that the quality of the car is great but not that great to demand the quoted price. I would prefer a much more spacious car made specifically for Indian conditions - Indica Vista. Its great value-for-money with a gem of an engine in the FIAT Multi-Jet. Just waiting for the export model to be launced with ABS and Airbags. This is one practical package for Indian families | Reply

I see a lot of shit being written here by people who dont know what a car is and what it is like outside. Please remember a couple of things. In India cars are so costly because of the taxes and other wise, it is one of the cheapest markets. A lot of people are writing about cars being underpowered and no auto versions being available. Will an average car buyer pay for these things. They wont and the car makers do a lot of research before launching new models. So readers, please be balanced in your views. For record, let me state that i owned an Accent for three years and I enjoyed the experience. | Reply

I dont know what stuck into Hyundais mind while making this car. They just increased the size of i10 which already was a shitty car and over priced it, which makes it out of the reach of middle class, for whom it is made..... I pity on Hyundai.... | Reply

good looking car, with underpowered engine. Over priced, this is default by hyundai. thought some of the popular brands have really done well even though it is priced. may be hyundai have learned to sell costlier cars with ease, i dont know. have to wait and watch what this can do in the market, considering recession and sluggish sales, this high priced beauty might not be a major blocker buster from hyundai is what i feel, letz wait and watch | Reply

As far as Hyundai is concerned it is a failure in APAC and all counties have discarded it. Even koreans don't buy Hyundai cards. Hyundai has bribed Indian politicians to rob our people in the name of some shit car they have copied from KIA motors | Reply

Hyndai cars compete with used cars in western market. I20 is trying to enter in the premium hatchback segment with europen look, not the quality. The car is priced high with underpower engine and no additional features. | Reply

Hyundai is making fool to Indian customers and putting the high cost and with no special features. Can they compare any foriegn cars models what features they added new in i10 / i20. in i20 no automatic transmission version whereas its globalisation demand. Excise has been cut and same to all the parts which they are built in car, but the price cut is not appropriate to and customer paying high for these small cars. | Reply

big car makers like forad, hundai, chavela are roobing indian buyers. you compair any Indian model with any western model and you will be surprised. you are getting nothing after paying so much money.fully loaded means is not only power window and staring but it also have features like fully loaded staring, inbuit GPS and more comfertable intirior which you will find in all western models in same price. for example compair ford fusion with western ford fusion and i am sure you will be surprised where as price is almost same with very low finance rate | Reply

Raj is right. The car is underpowered. The engine has to kept on the boil to get any decent performance. And if you have a full car (4 adults) you need to switch off the AC when climbing even a modest slope (like the old maruti Esteem with the 1000cc engine). And it is over priced as well. With the launch of the Fiat Linea Hyundai will have to to take a relook at the specs and pricing of the I20.Perhaps the Diesel engine that powers the Getz will give better on road performance and drive sales too. | Reply
