The i20 has landed and we took it for a spin. Here are some initial observations.
If there ever was an event that could lift our spirits during an extremely slow automotive season when launches have been postponed to the next year, it's the arrival of the i20 - thank you Hyundai! The Korean carmaker has been on a rampage with its entry level small car - the i10 - first with the 1.1 litre iRDe engine and then with the peppy, powerful and frugal 1.2 litre Kappa powerplant.
Moving up a notch in the small car segment is the brand new i20 - positioned straight against the likes of the Suzuki Swift and Chevrolet U-VA and also targeting the Indica Vista on one end and the Skoda Fabia on the other.
The car is extremely good looking - a design theme that is fresh and carries on from Hyundai's i10 design philosophy with bug-eye protruding headlights and a curvy body from front to back. The cute appearance of the i20 is well-balanced by muscular hints like the ridge along the centre and sides of the bonnet as well as the slightly flared wheel arches.
The car looks big and radiates an imposing aura of being spacious on the inside as well - which it is! Leg room abounds and the car can seat five people comfortably enough. But what really takes you by surprise is the cavernous boot at the back. This hatch has enough there to put a few sedans to shame!
