Honda Jazz

8 Jan 2009

Honda Jazz

In India by: June 2009

Will cost: Rs 5-6 lakhs

Honda Siel is expected to see mid-2009 as time 'Fit' to launch its stylish 5-door hatchback, the Jazz. Already having made its mark in Japan and across the world, this smart city car will come with a 1.3-litre inline-4 petrol VTEC engine keeping in mind the economy demands of the segment, but if Honda feels generous (we wish it does) a peppier 1.5-litre engine could also be offered, making the Jazz a nice hot hatch.

Battling it out with current large hatches like the Indica Vista and the i20, as well as new competition from Fiat in the form of the Fiat Bravo and Grande Punto, the Indian hatchback space seems set to get even more crowded in 2009. Not like we're complaining.

At slightly higher price and better finish Skoda is able to sell only 180 to 250 cars (Fabia) per month. It will be interesting to see how many Jazz can be soled at this super high prices tag and how Honda justifies 7lak for a hatch.Considering the 100k capacity of the platform which will be shared by Jazz and City and work halted at Rajasthan site, it will be impossible for Honda to compete with Swift (9K per month) and cut a big pie in this segment. As the VP Marketing says Honda is exploring an all new category, it will be wait and watch situation for others including many Jazz aspirants | Reply

This car is actually quite big. I saw a lot of these in Indonesia. The old Honda city was really the Jazz with a boot fitted on later (like the Indica modified to the Indigo). That's why both looked so hideous from behind. Now with the boot removed and the original contours put back, we'll get the old Honda City with a correct shape. But it will cost a bomb and you won't have any diesel option. So we'll have to buy the Maruti Ritz which inspite of it's awful looks, might win hands down because of it's marvelous little diesel engine and cheap spare parts. | Reply

Jazz is going to create new category in India i.e. premium hatch back. Will give serious threat to even 3 box cars, its tall boy design on New City platform with spacious boot space and all the safety features are welcome.Won't be cheap, will be VFM if priced around 6 L.Eagerly awaiting its launch to replace/add to my Indica Petrol that has given excellent service over the last 5 yrs. | Reply

People need to understand that the JAZZ is an SUPERMINI and not anyother hatchback like the swift.Infact in Thailand the top end JAZZ is more expensive than the CIVIC.U can't get such a upmarket car under 5 lakhs.Indians will be lucky to get it below 6 lakhs.I believe the top end 1.5 i-Vtec will cost as much as Honda City. | Reply

This car is really jazzy, the only problem is the price, which is little on the higher side, considering the price sentiveness of Indian car market. | Reply

Love the Jazz. Its my wifes car and I keep making excuses to trade with her. Problem is my wife loves it too. Its good a good internal design and ample headroom. Its wheel mounted paddle shifters (synchro manual) are a treat. Its only issue is tyre wear. | Reply

The 1.3 liter Jazz’s i-VTEC engine puts out a nice 100 PS at 6,000rpm and 127Nm of torque at 4,800rpm, while the 1.5 liter Jazz’s i-VTEC engine makes 120 PS at 6,600rpm and 145Nm of torque at 4,800rpmJazz is not just a hatchback version of city, it is more upmarket. Jazz share the seats with accord and its steering wheel resembles civic. Jazz is stylish and embellish typical Honda design - sharp lines and central bonnet ridge. Honda Jazz sharp headlamps supplements thesteeply raked windscreen but the front grille resembles the CR-V.Jazz is roomy just not because of well known Honda’s clever packaging but also through its generous dimensions. Honda’s Jazz is 3900mm longer(qualifyies to avail the tax benefit), 1695mm wider and has a 2500mm longer wheelbase which means a comfortable living space inside the hatchback | Reply
