Fiat Linea lines up the Competition

Fiat Linea lines up the competition

With the Linea launch around the corner, Fiat is finally ready to pull an ace out of its hat with this much awaited C-segment sedan.

The car looks striking to say the least but in a clean and uncluttered manner, rather elegant I might add. Designed by the Fiat Style Center the looks of the car have been appreciated by all and hated by none. The massive grille and the sharply raked windscreen are reminiscent of the Bravo, another soon to be launched large hatch by Fiat.

The smooth lines are carried over to the rear as well with its largish tail lamps that give the car a contemporary look. Compared to the cars in its segment, the Linea is a pretty huge car, being 4.5 metres long and 1.7 metres wide.

The interiors look equally good being spacious and well laid-out as well. The Linea's interiors are carefully designed and assembled, as regards the quality, comfort and practicality.

Fiat Linea lines up the competition

Under the hood, Fiat is providing the multifarious 1.3 litre Multijet diesel unit. For the petrol heads there is the 1.4 litre FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotized Engine) coupled with the C510 5-speed manual transmission. We just hope Fiat plonks in an updated 1.6 litre unit from the Palio which would definitely give it even more go for its already present show.

Fiat Linea lines up the competition

The Linea looks like an extremely competent sedan with efficient engines and top notch build quality. If priced correctly there is no reason why it should not help change Fiat's future in India.

To all the intending Linea buyers, even I was going through the same dilemma while finalizing my choice for a petrol sedan. Having a close look at it and after test driving it, it is quite difficult to get Linea out of mind, knowing fully that this car offers the most value for the money. Just an information to share with you guys, which information was an eye-opener for me as well. As distinguished from just another business arrangement, Fiat in India is a 50: 50 joint venture between Fiat Italy and Tata Motors. As per the information available on the website of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, as on March 31, 2008, the paid up capital of Fiat India is more than 1174 Crores. It therefore means a substantial amount of moneys put into by both the JV partners, and which could only mean that a long term approach is being adopted by both the JV Partners. I have just made up my mind to go ahead with the Linea Petrol. (http:/www.mca.gov.in/DCAPortalWeb/dca/MyMCALogin.do | Reply

Fiat Linea has given good mileage and comfort right throughout since the time i have bought it in March 2009. A great high to drive and extremely comfortable at any speed. Servicing is no problem as Tata motors will do the needful . No car currently in C segment can match the features and overall comparisons which Linea has to offer. I will strongly recommend Linea to any new aspirant . | Reply

To all of you who are concerned about FIAT service esp John Peter who is orn between Linea and verna.I too underwent the same dilemma but decided to go for Linea. I am owning Linea Diesle emotion for more than 3 months now and I am very happy with the service of FIAT. They have improved a lot. I have seen similar comments or observations from other Linea owners too on carwale and team BHP etc. | Reply

IF NOW FIAT START GOOD SERVICE WITH TATA THEN THE CAR HAS GOOD FEATURE AND ALSO CUSTOMER BELIVE IN NEXT COMING PRODUCT OF FIAT, NOW WITH THE LINEA FIAT GET ONE GOOD CHANCE TO IMPROVE THEIR IMAGE | Reply
  • John Peter (12 March 2009 19:45)
I am not able to decide between Linea Emotion and Verna SXI. I amtotally lost with the elegance and capabilities of Linea but worried about its service back up in India. Verna though not as impressive as that of Linea, its service back ups and spare cost and availability would be much better as compared to Lenea. I am not really bothered about re sale value of Linea. Could you please tell me about the understanding/agreement between Fiat and Tata motors? How many years Tata motors would take up this kind of support to Fiat? If Tata motors breaks the support, what would be the fate of the Fiat clients? Please clarify. | Reply

I don't think it will change the current bad scenario for the good to fiat looking at the service, resale value and 8.7-9.7lac price for low capacity engines. They shud cut the price much more to be in competition. Otherwise same fate as palio, uno. | Reply

I have been driving my FIAT UNO for the last 11 years.I has stood the test of time and still touches 130kms or more on the highways without vibrating as other lighter cars do. I have never done wheel alignment of wheel balancing for the last 11 years. It is truely a great car, but the company has failed its customers, as no spares are available now through its retail outlets. Even the insurance rates for this have hiked because no spares are available. It is sad end to a glorious era and faith in the product. Can you believe am offered only 20-30 thousand even though it is in fully running condition fully tuned up. | Reply

FIAT has such a huge fan following in India, despite its sabotaging Dealer Network!!! Now that they have tied up with TATA for Sales and Service, hope things have improved. Yet, I feel FIAT should come out with their own exclusive SERVICING NETWORK, to separate it from products from Tata stable. My experience with Tata Service is that they tend to 'overdo' by replacing parts- may be they have an internal target for consummables! FIAT should be a differentiator if it has to survive sandwitched between troia- TATA, Maruti and Hyundai! Good luck. | Reply

FIAT ALWAYS COMES OUT WITH BRILLIANT CARS.WHOSOEVER DESIGNS CARS FOR THEM DESERVES LOT OF PRAISE.FIAT CARS ARE RUGGED AND EXTRA ORDINARY IN PERFORMANCE.BUT THEIR ENEMY IS NOT OUT SIDE BUT WITHIN.THEIR MARKETING DEPT AND AFTER SALES ARE THEIR ARE THEIR WORST ENEMIES, AS THEY CANT SELL SUCH A GOOD PRODUCT AND CANT PROVIDE GOOD SERVICES.UNLESS THEY MAKE MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS IN THESE ARES, THE FATE OF LINEA WILL BE SAME AS THAT OF UNO/PALIO.THEY WILL HAVE TO COME OUT OF ORTHODOX WAY OF MANAGEMENT.THEY MAY ALSO THINK OF POACHING TO IMPROVE IN THESE AREAS. IHAVE A PALIO, WHICH IS BRILLIANT EVEN AFTER SIX YEARS WITHOUT ANY BREAK DOWN. | Reply

Don't worry about the service, FIAT has new plans for that, If any minute complaint from the customer about the dealer will cancel their dealership. Also Linea has first service after 1000 or 2000 Km, then next service is required only after 3 years | Reply
  • Aman (18 December 2008 11:11)
What about Service Backup Fiat has a poor record of After Sales Service and that might be a huge negative with this car too. So one should think 10 times before buyimg this car. Moreover the tieup with TATAs n Fiat last how long that is something to look for. | Reply
  • Raj (17 December 2008 13:36)
Linea is a awesome sedan to wait for. I have booked Dzire ZDI and am waiting for 8 months now for its delivery. With launch of Fiat Linea, I would wait for another month to check on its price and decide between Dzire and Linea. If Linea comes at an affordable price, it makes more sense to go for it. Dzire comes 7.30 lac on road in Chennai. If Fiat prices Linea diesel top end in the range of 8.30 lac it makes lot sense as Verna is also priced in the same range. What do you thing is a good price for Linea you can pay for? | Reply
  • Pradeep HR (17 December 2008 12:00)
Answer to some of the questions,1. the Linea will be here in mid Jan 2009.2. The after sales service will be of the highest priority to fiat, and it is most likely that they are not going to screw it up. 3. First there will be diesel engine (90 bhp) and then the 1.4lt petrol (likely 95 bhp). 4. Linea is not a competition to logan and dzire, its way above their league and would compete with the fiesta, verna, city and even for that matter the old skoda.5. I think they will price it right, bcoz they have to build their image and bcoz of the economic slowdown. | Reply
  • T THOMAS (16 December 2008 20:46)
The Linea is sure to be a damn good car as I read in a review. As big as a corolla or Jetta, has 90 bhp & 20.4kgm torque. The car is supposed to have great ride and handling along with a great responsive steering feedback. The interiors with classy speedo dials are neatly done. Rear head room not adequate, leg room could have been more, water bottle holder space a minus, boot opening is narrow. All that really matters is the service,as it could be history, either way. | Reply
  • Suri (16 December 2008 15:35)
It doesn't matter how great Fiat cars are or will be as long as their both sales & after sales service suck. I own a Fiat palio, which is a great car like a rock, but service has been horrible especially after Tata guys took over. They treat Fiats like their beaten up trash taxi Indicas. Every time I drop off the car for servicing it is a suspense, what these guys will break this time. Even the ads are pathetic for such great cars. I am not buying a Fiat again, how much ever I am tempted by the looks/technology. I suggest the same to all. Don't get carried away. | Reply

Although The diesel engine is the same which is on the Swift and Indica vista but its turbo charged and henceforth it churns close to about 90 BHP. That would priety much compensate for the extra weight of the linea. Not sure how much the petrol churns out but I'm always fond of petrol. | Reply

surely this is a jackpot from FIAT. I am not sure about the engine sizes being discussed i.e the 1.3 &1.4 ltr in diesel & petrol. hope it will justify the size of the car !!. I am really looking forward for this product and am a sure buyer for the diesel model in case the engine power is up to the mark. i currently own the 1.6 petra which is a 'rocket' !! absolute bullet proof quality and low maintainence. FIAT has to work on its after sales where even i have suffered. the existing dealers are pathetic and worthless. need immediate replacement on a national basis. this should be the priority No 1 for the sales & Marketing team before the launch of this product even if it means a delay in the launch by a few months. the existing lot will just not do. All the best for the re-entry to India and hope you guys will rock this time. Cheers !!! | Reply

Fiat May have come up with this great option and may also price linea well, yet for it to revive its market, the biggest challenge it faces is to compete with the quality of after sales services of its rivals. This car would revive FIAT in India if they take care of a good consumer experience | Reply

I have Palion 1.6 model... really really happy with it.. no issues what so ever... Fiat is ALWAYS sincere. Right now I had to leave India,,, but I kept the Palio.. I still miss those brute force sound of the engine. Even my bmw with 230 hp feels "insincere" since it delivers torque only in narrow range... Palio was better... And Linea looks a natual upgrade.. just hope that the 1.4 petrol engine is the turbo one? (120bhp)... cannot wait to go back to India :) | Reply

It is all very well to say the Linea is good and prima facie it should be good. However the challenge to Fiat will lie in how effectively it states that it has turned the corner from its hapless performance in the Uno - Palio days. Also to be seen and felt would be the way its partner Tata Motors trying to market and sell the car. | Reply
